Fw: Postnominals through use?

I had sent this message to David Nelson direct, but somehow there is
something wrong with his e-mail address.

In my opinion, which you should not take too seriously, I think it depends
when and where they place DG after their name. If it is in correspondence
with other DGs, I would say that would be correct. But if they use it all
the time, it would be silly as most people would have no idea what it
stands for. Also, in a way, DG is borrowing feathers, whereas when you are
allowed to have K.G. behind your name, you have earned it yourself. It
will be interesting to see what others think.

With best wishes

While it's legal for people (outside more litigiously heraldic nations
than
the United States) to adopt and use chivalric postnominals, what
complaints
would be valid (aside from exageration or fraud) against the practice? An
example: the Friends and Companions of the College of St. George at
Windsor
Castle (formerly the Society of the Friends of St. George's and
Descendants
of the Knights of the Garter) enjoy more than 5,000 members including
what
they call "descendant members." If such descendant members adopted the
postnominal of "DG (Descendant of the Garter)" as an accurate description
of
their memberships, descents and nod to the more famous postnominals "KG"
and
"LG," what might be the likely opinions of strident heraldrists and
genealogists?
