Hello Will. I think that I understand what you are trying to say.

Let me start by stating this... I am not an expert, nor claim to be knowledgeable in genealogy, nor history. I am learning more and more everyday. I love history. And, no, I am not writing a book.

On to your comment - Do I personally have the sources documented for Ambrose COBBS and Ann WHITE? - No. Do I know for a fact that Mike has them?- No. Do I have sources documented for John COBBS and Anne Long? - not me, but my cousin does. I doubt that Mike says things on his website unless he knows it to be a fact... like that something came from a will or probate record without seeing it and taking notes or having a copy of it if that was possible. With that said... he has what he has documented there regarding Ambrose COBBS and Ann WHITE. I believe that it came from his or somebody else's research. He has researched from them down to John COBBS and Anne Long... and we (me and my family) can trace back up to John COBBS and Anne Long without missing a beat... it looks like a match to me. And, Mike connected to this guy in England who wrote the book on COBBS from Kent. I am sure that he did quality research over there.

Getting back to your comment... as I understand... Mike Cobb's COBB Site not only did extensive research of his own and at his own expense, but had the services of several genealogists to help locating ship records, tax rolls, wills, estate records, church records, census records, etc not only here, but abroad as well. I have personally seen many of the same documents while spending time researching down in Williamsburg, Bruton Church, and in the College of Wm and Mary years back and shared whatever I found with Mike back then. Years back... I had spoken to Mike about various things and exchanged e-mails, plenty of them over the years. I sent stuff his way. Some he saw before and some not. Mike has done a great job digging up the documents, census records, etc to list names on the pedigree. He is also quick to make changes as the DNA Project grows with each new date entry and research comes in. I am sure that Mike has copies of the marriage records, estate records, death records, wills, church records, etc and just hasn't listed each source exactly the way that you may be use to. He says when he deduces and that it said so and so in the will and made copies on the site of the will if it was available. I've seen the notes there. And if someone comes along with proof of the contrary... then I am sure that he is big enough to document the change. He has already done this with results from the DNA Project... he's moved lines and added others as the results prove otherwise.

I do know this... I know who I am and who I descend from. And, some... we know the who... but not all of the in-betweens. And the same for the ones that we know that we are related to, but may not have all of the in-between for them yet either. That does not mean that we are not related... all that means is that I am missing a generation or two between me and so and so. I know that I descend from so and so... going way, way back. Can I prove it yet, not yet. I was told these old family stories ever since I was a little kid... and heard these family stories from my parents, from cousins, aunts/uncles, great aunts/uncles, and grandparents. And now, I am helping other family members try to prove the old stories to the best we can. I grew up loving history because of the old family stories. Family stories and genealogy was handed down from generation to generation... that's the old way. And, some may not have chosen to remember all of them... but just the ones that they liked best. Unfortunately, over the generations... much was lost... time, floods, fire, tornados, etc. There had been a fire or two and much was lost within our family alone. My brothers house was destroyed from one of those tornadoes several years back and all of the research that they did was lost, including the computer. While researching down south a few years ago while staying at a cousin's house... their vacation trailer where I was staying was destroyed by a fire while we out getting dinner. All that I had including my dad's laptop and original family photos that I had on that trip were destroyed in that fire. Family members die and the remaining family dumps the old photos and notes because it isn't important to them and they don't want to store the stuff.

I just read on VA-ROOTS : burned TN courthouses - "JAMES county 1871 - 1919 then it merged with Hamilton. The court house burned twice and the early records of the county were destroyed." Many fires were intentional, some accidental.

$#@% happens.

Again, I am not an expert, nor a genealogist... I am just someone with a lifetime of family stories and a treasure trove of photos, family albums, and old family notes and have access to my cousins' treasure trove of stories and old family photos who are just like me just trying to find documentation to prove and put credence to the old family stories.

We know who our great-grandparents are and have old family notes and stories that gave us clues to who they are. We have very old family photos with names and some without. My brother and sister and I viewed countless records... census records, etc here for the family out here in the east and my cousins out in AR and IL put their time in out there where our family lived for many generations looking at wills, estate records, tax records, census records, etc. We shared old family photos, stories, and names. We always knew who our great-grandparents were and have old photos to boot. Then, one of my cousins contacted Mike at his site and because we had what we did we were able to connect with him at his research site. We send him copies of what we had back then and send him stuff as we find it now and he adds it to the rest of the stash. There is a big DNA Project that my dad participated in so that we could have our line kept right where we knew it should be. Dad's DNA proved that we are in this family... along with others claiming to be descended from Ambrose COBBS and Anne White and we come to them through Anna (Long) and John COBB. And yes, I short cutted by connecting our Anna Long and John COBB to his research at his site... I remembered.

We have old family photos of Anna Long, wife of John COBB... my great-great grandparents. We have photos of my other great-grandparents as well as some of their siblings and families. Some of the photos are older than that... we have no names for them yet. We (our family, cousins included) researched and found supporting census records and copies of wills and/or estate records and/or other records to help support our claim... and then shared them with Mike.

Our family is what it is and has as its members who it does... we cannot change that. Nor would we want to change who we come from... what would be the point? It wouldn't be real. Our lines are not so cut and dry and as well documented as the famous kings and queens of the world are as you and some of the others on this list have in your families. Speaking for some in my family... most of us can't afford the big research trips nor have the funds to hire the big and famous genealogists like you and some of the others here on the list. I did much of my research while out of town either at one of the professional conventions and/or seminars that I attended over the years. Like when I was out at in Kansas... I went looking for Captn Henry French, 7th Calvary who was said to have been interred at Fort Levenworth. He wasn't there. He had been reentered back in DC closer to where his family was and still is. The rest of the family didn't know about the change. I am descended from his sister Sarah. Sarah is one of our French connections. I have spoken at length to several of the family members who are closer to them than we are. He was one of the few who survived... he was up on the hill with Reno at Custer's Last Stand. I have a copy of one of the family photos of Sarah. One of my brothers have been researching the military side of the family... it's a guy thing I guess. I may not personally have the proof... but the French side of the family does and have some of his personal effects.

My sister and I love researching the women in the family as well as their lines just to get to know them better. Most guys do guys... and leave the women out. And, we do have a few women's names missing and we are trying to fix that if possible. In researching the women in the family... why not start with Ann WHITE. And, until otherwise proven... I have to trust that the author of the book on the early COBBS must have done his homework along with digging up old family stories as well. Until, something proves otherwise... it works for now. I am in contact with some of the surnames in Ann's family back and trust that they know who their ancestors are as well. With permission... I'll pass it on to Mike and post it here.

I am sure that you have old family stories that you heard as a child from the old ones at family gatherings, funerals, weddings, etc. Do they come with proof? Probably not. Mine don't. That's why I am researching and looking for the best sources and proof that we can find to support the old family stories. So far, they appear to be true as I am finding documents to prove them to be true. And now, we keep looking for what ever we can to help us connect back to the known end of the story.

I came here to learn and sort what I find out regarding my early ancestors. This seems like a great place to learn about the people and times of the Druids. One of my sister has always been fascinated with the Celtic side of the family... as for me... I always liked the old English and Scots side of the family and loved the plaids and tartans.

I'm done. Getting back to Ann WHITE... if I come across a relative that has more proof on these people... I'll share it here... with permission.. of course. Otherwise... I'll just have some that are just that... undocumented. Not much I can do about that... it'll mean that those ancestors and/or kin listed are not documented... they'll still be my ancestors and/or kin.

Thanks for helping me to realize how important the documentation is

Best Regards,
Dolores

But Dolores, what is the proof that any of these Cobbs are related at all to that Ambrose Cobbs who was of Chesterfield County, Virginia and who married an Ann said-to-be White ?

That's the issue. It's not really going to do any good to go Cobbs hunting in Kent unless you have very firm proof that Ambrose Cobbs comes from that very family.
