Typing error medieval style?

King Henri I of France was the father of three sons
1.Philippe I, who succeeded him
2.Robert who died aged about five
3.Hugues I Magnus, Count of Vermandois and Valois

William of Tyre called the third son "Hugues Magnus" (Hugues the Great), but he was an ineffectual leader and soldier, great only in his boasting. Indeed, Sir Steven Runciman is certain that 'Magnus' is a copyist error, and should be 'minus', 'the younger' (referring to Hugues as younger brother of the king of France).

I find it fascinating to see how widespread descendants of medieval people can be. Just to stick to the USA, this apparently ineffectual leader is an ancestor of the following presidents of the USA

1.George Washington
3.Thomas Jefferson
4.James Madison Jr.
6.John Quincy Adams
9.William Henry Harrison
12.Zachary Taylor
18.Ulysses S.Grant
19.Rutherford Hayes
22+24 Stephen Grover Cleveland
23 Benjanin Harrison
26.Theodore Roosevelt
27.William Howard Taft
30.Calvin Coolidge
32.Franklin Delano Roosevelt
33.Harry S. Truman
38.Gerald Ford
41.George Herbert Bush
43.George Walker Bush

The number of Gateway Ancestors is even larger, I stopped counting after 19.

Runciman was wrong about this - it has been discussed here before. The
byname "Magnus" with the given name Hugo in his family did not reflect an
outstanding career or personal qualities, was not an error, and did not
orignate with William of Tyre. It has also been said incorrectly that the
byname originated with a mistranslation into Latin of "le maisné",
indicating only "the younger brother" (i.e. of King Philippe I); however,
the doublet Hugo Magnus was traditional in the early Capetian family, and
the count of Vermandois was the fourth man to bear this combined name
including others who were eldest or only sons. Notably, this Hugo Magnus,
count of Vermandois had a daughter Agnès who married Bonifacio I, margrave
of Vasto, giving birth to a younger son by him who was named Hugo Magnus
(Ugomagno) aft the maternal grandfather. It seems pretty clear from the
repetition over many generations that family members considered this a
compound name, hoping that the boy would grow up to display its quality,
with the second element being definitely "magnus" (great).

Ah Jeez, Leo - I was just getting used to the horrid truth of being
the current president's 10th cousin! Best, Bronwen
