"Mr Hoskins - I presume you are the gentleman of the same name who
worked on the RD for John de Umphreville of New Haven, Ct??"

Dear Mr. Burke:

Gary Boyd Roberts's, in his _RD_ , cites my article in which I
established the origins in England of the New England settler, John
Umfreville (1630-al.1720), of New Haven, Connecticut. The citation
(sorry not to have the page numbers at the moment) is:

Anthony Hoskins, "The English Origin of John Umfreville of New Haven,
Connecticut," _The American Genealogist_ 72 (January 1997.)

John Umfreville (of the Ewell, Surrey family, later of New Haven,
Connecticut) can be shown to descend from a bastard Umfreville line. The
particulars of this, however, were not set out in extenso in my article
because Segar's pedigree and Surtees treatment (on which the ancient
lineag is based) of the family need to be fleshed out with additional
research. I am confident the connection to the ancient Umfrevilles is
sound, but am of the opinion that a fair amount of additional work
remains before the pedigree could be called "finished".

Do you descend from John Umfreville? He is one of my 9 greats
grandfathers. I find among 17th century English settlers in America that
he has very few descendants.

With best wishes,

Tony Hoskins
