Gospatric of Samlesbury

Robert:

Your theory regarding Gospatric being a Cuerdale is of
interest. Evidence is required to support your
contention; currently all information that I have
gathered to date is not encouraging.

Gospatric apparantly married a Hindley, and his eldest
son Roger held land in Hindley thereafter. Please
advise if you have any success in identifying the
parents of Gospatric.

If it is not too much trouble, would like to examine
the Cuerdale data that you have mentioned. Perhaps I
may identify a clue?

My current records of the Cuerdale line is minimal,
and extracted from the registers of Cockersand Abbey:

1190/1220 Gospatric (son) Warin Cuerdale.
1190/1220 Peter (son) Warin Cuerdale
1230/68 Award (son) Matthew Cuerdale
1290/1330 Alexander Cuerdale
1311 Alexander Cuerdale

May I suggest that in your research you study the
following documents:

Lancashire Charters and Plea Rolls (Farrer)
Whalley Coucher (Whitacker)
Register Cockersand Abbey
Register St John Pontefract
Register Penwortham Abbey
Register St Bees Abbey
Register Holm Abbey
Furnace Coucher

Regarding the usage of first names, additional forms
of identification must have been necessary as
populations increased. Also the practise of many
families to name 2-3 sons the same first name to allow
for inevitable deaths.

Sincerely Yours,

Paul Bulkley

Paul here is one quote which may imply some family connection between
Keuerdale and Samlesbury. I think the Wiki Cuerdale entry shows the
lineage of Geoffrey de Keuerdale (abt 1274-1314)
Gilbert

from Lancashire Inquests Extents and Feudal Aids
PART II.A.D. I3IO-A.D. I333.EDITED BY WILLIAM FARRER.THE
PRINTED FOR RECORD SOCIETY 1907

"The heirs of Samlesbury and Geoffrey de Keuersdale held one
ploughland in Ovrederwent [Over Darwen] by the service of the 8th part
of a knight's fee, and by doing suit at the aforesaid court...
Hugh de Salesbury held Salesbury and Little Penhulton [Little
Pendleton] in thegnage and renders 23s. \§d. yearly at the feast of
St. Giles and does suit at the aforesaid court."

The descent I have so far is:

Warine or Warenne de Keuerdale-(children marr1 Gilbert Siegrrith
William) (children marr 2 Gospatric Peter Richard)
Gilbert de Keuerdale( b bef 1142)-children Adam, Alice, Alexander
Alexander de Keuerdale( b bef 1170)-- Children Gilbert, Alexander,
Alice
Alexander de Keuerdale( b bef 1237)-- child Alexander
Alexander de Keuerdale( b bef 1258)--children Geffrey, Robert
Geffrey de Keuerdale( b bef 1274)-- children John, Margery, Joan,
Agnes
John de Keuerdale( b bef 1314 died 20 Oct 1345)-- children Alice and
Joan
Joan de Keuerdale ( b bef 1339)-- had no children, married Thomas
Molyneux who was killed at Battle of Radcot Bridge
