Mediaeval Dorset

Having been rather tied up with other things lately, I finally managed
to get down to Dorset today with my camera.

I visited Wimborne Minster, and have some photographs of the effigy-
tomb of John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset (d 1440) and his wife Margaret
nee Beaufort, the parents of Margaret, Countess of Richmond and thus
maternal grandparents of Henry VII.

I also called into Sherborne, and in the Abbey got some snaps of the
effigies of the two Sir John Horseys, father and son, dated c1565, and
that of John and Joan Leweston (1584).

My final stop was Old Sherborne Castle, built by Roger de Caen, Bishop
of Salisbury under Henry I, and subsequently at one time the seat of
Sir Walter Raleigh, before motoring on to enjoy the natural beauty of
Lulworth Cove.

As usual, I would be happy to forward copies to anyone interested.

Cheers, Michael

Are you sure about the d 1440 ?
I have that he wasn't cr Duke of S until 1443
Also that Margaret his daughter wasn't born until Apr 1441

On his wife Margaret don't you mean nee Beauchamp ?
dau of John de jure 3rd Lord Beauchamp of Bletsoe by his wife Edith Stourton

Guilty on both charges!

John Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset, died in 1444, not 1440.

His wife was born Margaret Beauchamp, not Beaufort.

However, I have their only child, Margaret, born 31 May 1443 (rather
than April 1441) [source: ODNB sub Margaret Beaufort]

Michael,

As always, as a collector of images concerning the Beauforts, I would
love to have copies of the Beaufort effigies.

Kindest thanks,
