Query: The worth of mtDNA for genealogy

Has mtDNA (which you *only* get from your mother) ever been used for genealogy purposes?

Are there living candidates that can be pointed to, whose mtDNA study might solve any centuries-old problems?

I presume you are familiar with the work done on mtDNA in identifying
the Romanov remains from the Ipatieff house? That certainly showed
the possibilities.

There was also a proposal you might recall being published in the
Genealogists' Magazine a few years ago to identify suitable subjects
for mtDNA testing (Vol 26, No 3, September 1998, pp 87-90: Seeking the
Genes of Lady Eleanor Talbot, by John Ashdown-Hill). I haven't heard
of any outcome for this project, but am pretty sure I posted something
on it here - the archives might throw something up.

OT but, given that the mitochondria are responsible for such a large
proportion of the cell's metabolic pathways for providing energy, I wonder
if anyone has ever looked at the extent to which athletic performance might
be determined by maternal inheritance.
