Sir William LOK (LOCK) - Alderman of London - 16th C

Does anyone have any information on the family of Sir William LOK (LOCK) who
was an alderman and sheriff of the City of London in the 16th century?

I have various references to children of Sir William including Michael,
Henry, Dorothy and Rose but I am trying to relate them and others to his 4
wives.

An ancestor of John Locke, according to the ODNB. There are several
excellent articles on the Lok/Locke family in it, including one on Sir
William, and others for two of his children.

Please let me know if it would be useful to have a genealogical
abstract of the information these contain.

Hello

Rose Locke is my ancestor. She married Anthony Hickman and their
daughter Elizabeth Hickman was the hated second wife of Sir Henry
Clinton-Fines (younger son of the 2nd Earl of Lincoln). His memoirs
say how much he disliked Elizabeth.
Rose Locke (known as Rose Throckmorton at her death) also wrote an
autobiography which mentions her father.

In researching what I could on the Lockes I managed to find a number
of articles. This is part of one that might help.

Lok, Sir William (1480-1550), mercer and merchant adventurer, was the
second son of Thomas Lok and grandson of John Lok, sheriff of London
in 1461, both of whom were also members of the Mercers' Company.
Although formally admitted to the company only in 1507, Lok was
already supplying clothes of gold and silver to the king in that year.
His daughter Rose Hickman later claimed that he became the mercer and
agent of Henry VIII 'beyond the seas'. Lok's strong Lutheran
convictions-his first wife, Alice, was one of England's first converts
to that doctrine-made him a willing servant of the early architects of
the English Reformation. During annual visits to the Low Countries to
trade at the marts of Antwerp and Bergen op Zoom, Lok provided
intelligence to Cromwell or the king, reporting rumours concerning
political and diplomatic developments in Europe.
Lok was married four times: to Alice Spenser (d. 1522); Catherine
Cooke (d. 14 Oct 1537); Eleanor Marsh (d. 1546); and Elizabeth
Meredith (d. 1551). He fathered nineteen children, of whom twelve,
five sons and seven daughters from his first two marriages, survived
into adulthood. His children included Rose [see Throckmorton, Rose],
Michael Lok and Henry, father of the poet Henry Lok, all children of
Catherine Cooke, and from his first marriage daughters Elizabeth (who
married Nicholas Bullingham, later bishop of Lincoln and Worcester)
and Jane, whose own three daughters all married members of the common
council.

Ben Lowe, 'Throckmorton , Rose (1526-1613)', Oxford Dictionary of
National Biography, Oxford University Press, Sept 2004; online edn,
Oct 2006 [http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/67979, accessed 18
March 2007]
Rose Throckmorton (1526-1613): doi:10.1093/ref:odnb/67979

The following site lists the children but as it doesn't give a name to
Rose I am not certain the rest are likely to be that accurate
http://kingsley.locke.net/gen/locke/locke-2.htm

Then this one might help

David,

As suggested, I have been through the Oxford Dictionary of National
Biography entries for the Locks, and extracted the relevant
genealogical material; the ODNB is an excellent resource, but a
secondary one at best, so the usual caveat applies:

Sir William Lok (1480-1550), as Sue has kindly noted already, was the
second son of Thomas Lok, and grandson of John Lok, sheriff of London
in 1461; they were both members of the Mercers' company; he married
four times: Alice Spenser (d 1522); Catherine Cooke (d 14 Oct 1537);
Eleanor Marsh (d 1546) and Elizabeth Meredith (d 1551); he fathered
nineteen (sic) children, of whom twelve, five sons and seven daughters
from his first two marriages, survived to adulthood. His children
included Rose (qv), Michael (qv) and Henry, father of the poet Henry
Lok (qv), all born of the second marriage; two of the daughters were
from the first marriage: Elizabeth, wife of Nicholas Bullingham,
Bishop of Lincoln & Worcester, and Jane "whose three daughters all
married members of the Common Council [of London]". He died 24 August
1550 and was buried in the Mercers' Chapel. St Thomas Acre, with his
parents and his first and fourth wives (the latter presumably after
her death the following year); he bore arms, which were displayed in a
window in the chapel.

Michael Lok (c1532-c1621), mercer; youngest of the five sons of his
father's second marriage; married c1562 Joan (d 1571) daughter of Sir
William Wilkinson, sheriff of London, by whom he had eight surviving
children; married secondly c1576 Margery (d c1582) widow of Cesar
Adelmare; his son Benjamin was with him in Ireland in 1587; his eldest
sons, Zachary, Benjamin and Matthew predeceased him, all leaving
wills; his IPM 1623.

Rose Lok (26 Dec 1526 - 21 Nov 1613) "the third of eleven children of
Sir William Lok, great-great-great grandfather of the philosopher John
Locke" by his second wife, Katherine, daughter of Sir Thomas Cook of
Wiltshire; married firstly 28.11.1543 Anthony Hickman (d 1573) by whom
she had at least two children; he was a business partner of her
brother Thomas Locke; married secondly Simon Throckmorton (d 1585) of
Brampton; she had a sister-in-law, Anne Locke, and another, Mary
Locke, wife of Thomas.

Henry Lok, poet, died after 1608; third son of Henry Lok (d 1571),
mercer of London, and his wife Anne, nee Vaughan (qv); married Ann
Moyle of Cornwall; had two sons, Henry (born 1592) and Charles.

Anne Lok nee Vaughan was daughter of Stephen Vaughan, merchant
adventurer (d 1549); she was noted as a religious activist and
translator, prominent in the early Protestant movement in London. Her
children by Lok included Henry, the poet, and Anne (d 1557 in
Geneva). Married secondly Edward Dering, and thirdly Richard Prowse,
MP, of Exeter.

That Rose b 1526 was "third" contradicts the idea that Thomas, Elizabeth and Jane were all by his first wife and they all survived to marry.

Will Johnson

Shouldn't it be read: "the third of eleven children of Sir William
Lok... by his second wife"?

Hi folks

Will has pointed out to me that I made a mistake in my first message
on this thread.......I should have said that Elizabeth Hickman was the
granddaughter not daughter of Rose Locke. That's what comes of writing
a reply in a hurry late at night and not rereading it........sorry.

Elizabeth's father was Doctor Henry Hickman who was one of the sons of
Rose and Anthony, and Elizabeth met her future husband Sir Henry
Clinton-Fynes at the home of her uncle William Hickman of
Gainsborough. This is what Sir Henry said in his memoirs.
If anyone wants a copy of the PDF of the memoirs of Sir Henry Clinton-
Fynes contact me and I will send it to you.

The Locke family were staunch protestants and friends of John Knox.
The Hickmans of Gainsborough sheltered protestants as well and I think
some of the Pilgrim Fathers met in their home at a later date.

Best wishes

I did some research on Rose Locke a few months ago and discovered that
the British Library wanted to charge ?42 for a copy of her memoirs.

I then did a bit more digging and found that the University of London
had an article about her which included most of the memoirs and they
sent me a copy for ?3 (including postage).

Contact me if you are interested in Rose Hickman/Throckmorton nee
Locke.

Best wishes
Sue
