Marriages during the medieval period

Legg inn av Margaret Bauer » 07 jul 2007 02:19:05

Hi everyone

I am hoping some kind soul might be able to aid me with a little explanation
please.
I have ancestors who lived near Modbury in Devon, and married about 1317 and
then their son about 1345.

Where, back in those ancient times might these early ceremonies have been
taken place?
Would it have been at the nearest so called "Priory" of that early period or
where?

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thankyou
Margaret Bauer

Not sure that marriages would have been generally celebrated in a
monastic institution but I am open to correction on that.
A lot of your marriages would have taken place at the parish church,
or perhaps at a private chapel in the family manor house if the family
in question had been granted a licence for one of these. If the family
had estates elsewhere the marriage could have taken place there.
Alternatively the marriages may have been celebrated in the home
parishes of the respective brides.

These might help. I expect in the case of your ancestors then it would
have been held in the porch of the local church.
