Deanes of Deaneland/Oxenwood/Tidcombe and their New England

An early issue of the _NEHGR_ says, "Thomas Deane, the testator [of
1683], was a merchant of Boston, Massachusetts, from 1664 to 1678,
when he returned to England and settled in London. He was a son of
James Deane of Deanelands and Oxenwood, and was born about 1640. He
married, first, Sarah, daughter of William Browne of Salem, Mass. ...
Mr. William Dean, of London, suggests that the testator's nephew,
Thomas Deane here named, of whom he finds no later trace in England,
may have emigrated to New England, and that the Thomas Deane of
Boston, Mass., 1692 (see REGISTER, xxxvii. p. 288), who owned pasture
and wood lots in Wrentham, Mass., where Thomas Deane of Freefolk
[i.e., the testator of 1683] was an early proprietor, may be identical
with him. It is possible that this conjecture is true, and facts to
disprove or confirm it are solicited. It is worthy of note that
Thomas Deane of Boston, 1692, married a niece [by marriage] of Peter
Lidget of Boston, the intimate friend of Thomas Deane of Freefolk.
Still it should be borne in mind that this can only be called a
conjecture."

It seems indisputable that Thomas Deane, the merchant who was in New
England in the 1660s and 70s, was of the family of Deane of Deanelands
(or Oxenwood or Tidcombe). A letter from this Thomas to Joseph Dudley
in New England mentions "my Coz: Duke" ...

See the issue of _Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica_ in which
the marriage record of John Duke and Avis Deane of Tidcombe
appears ...

[Incidentally, this Thomas Deane of Tidcombe and Freefolk was one of
the attorneies of Capt. Thomas Breedon in his business contra Mr. John
Gifford.

The second Thomas Deane, speculated to be the one who married widow
Jane (Scammon) Stedman [niece of Peter Lidget's wife Elizabeth] at
Boston in 1691, was a son of John Deane, M.P., and his second wife
Magdalen Stroughill.

For a biography of this John Deane, see Basil D. Henning, ed., _The
History of Parliament: The House of Commons, 1660-1690_. John's first
wife, mother of his heir James Deane, was Margaret Gerrard of
Lambourn, Berks. Even though Thomas and Henry Deane were sons of the
second wife (Stroughill), they were baptized at Lambourn as well. See
the extracted IGI:

Lambourn, Berks.
--Henry Deane, son of John and Magdalin, bapt. 12 Oct. 1670
--Thomos [sic] Dean, son of John and Magdolen, bapt. 19 Dec. 1672

For proof that Peter Lidget was indeed the business partner of the
first Thomas Deane, see Bernard Bailyn, _The New England Merchants in
the Seventeenth Century_. The HOP account of John Deane, M.P., states
his son Henry, a minister, went to the West Indies in about 1695. See
also ...

I think it is possible the Thomas Deane who married Lidget's niece
Jane Scammon in 1691 was indeed the son of John Deane, M.P., by his
wife Magdalen. Two things that might weigh against the identification
are (1) his age (nineteen) at marriage; and (2) that he had no
daughter called Magdalen.

Comments welcome.

I think I may have solved the mystery of how Charles Lidgett's wife
Mary (nee Hester) was a great-niece of Madam Leverett (nee Sarah, dau.
of Major-General Robert Sedgwick).

Note that her father, William Hester, was said to be of Southwark. In
the extracted IGI for Saint Olave, Southwark, Surrey, we find

William Hester to Sarah Houghton, 14 April 1659

Major General Robert Sedgwick had a sister Mary, wife of Robert
Houghton:
