Another C.P. Addition: Death date of Margaret Longespee, Cou

Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage, 7 (1929): 681-687 (sub Lincoln) includes a lengthy
account of the important life of Sir Henry de Lacy (died 1311), Earl
of Lincoln, hereditary Constable of Chester. According to that
account, Sir Henry de Lacy married twice as follows:

"He married, 1stly, as abovementioned, Margaret, 1st daughter and
coheiress of William Lungespee. She was living 11 Kal. Sept. 1306.
He married, 2ndly, before 16 June 1310, Joan, daughter of William,
Lord Martin, by Eleanor, widow of John de Mohun, of Dunster. and
daughter of Sir Reynold FitzPiers. He died s.p.m.s. at his manor of
Holborn, 5, and was buried 28 Feb. 1310/1, in St. Paul's, London."
END OF QUOTE.

As we can see, no death date is provided for Sir Henry's first wife,
Margaret Longespee. Rather we are simply told that she was living 11
Kal. Sept. 1306, which Roman date converts to 22 August 1306.

There is, however, a record of the deaths of both Countess Margaret
and Earl Henry found in the work, Chronicon Angliæ Petriburgense,
edited by Giles (1845). These entries are both found on page 136 and
read as follows:

1. sub A.D. 1309: "Obiit domina Margareta Longespee, comitissa
Lincolniæ, et sepulta est apud Lacock."

2. sub A.D. 1310: "Obiit dominus Henricus Lacy, comes Lincolniæ, et
Londoniæ apud Sanctum Paulum est humatus."

Thus, it appears that Margaret Longespee, Countess of Lincoln, died in
1309, and was buried at Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, which religious house
was founded by her ancestors. The death date of 1310 for her husband,
Earl Henry, would be correct as Feb. in 1311 was considered to be 1310
by the church calendar then in use, hence the double dating of the
earl's death cited by Complete Peerage as being 1310/1.

Regarding Sir Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, Whittaker says of him in
reviewing his life: "... "the last and greatest man of his
line." [Reference: Whitaker, Hist. of Original Parish of Whalley, 1
(1872): 236-254].

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

P.S. Checking the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, I
see that the new ODNB biography of Henry de Lacy states that his first
wife, Margaret Longespee, died in 1309, but gives no place of her
burial. Chronicon Angliæ Petriburgense is not cited as a source in
the puddle of references provided by the author.

Applying the same logic to both cases we see that Margaret may have died 1309 OR 1310
Since Henry, although dying *in modern terms* in 1311, is said-to-have died in 1310.
