Following up info found in Heralds visitations (Perry family

Legg inn av Vicki Perry » 05 jul 2007 09:30:05

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could make a few suggestions of where to look next
or (even better) if anyone is researching these families.

While tracing the origins of the Irish Perry families, I have come across a
family of the name in Wotton Under Edge, Gloucester. They are named in the
visitation as 'Hunter alias Pery' and the earliest member of the family is
said to be Joseph Hunter who 'came from Yorkshire and was called Pery'. His
grandson, Hugh, was christened in Wotton in 1590, the son of Thomas. So I'm
pretty certain, unless I'm very lucky, that I won't find Joseph in the
parish registers as he's too early.

Has anyone got any tips for tracing this family? I know that Yorkshire is a
big place, but the existance of the two names together might prove to be a
clue. And if they were an armorial family when they got to Gloucs, is it
likely they'd have arms in Yorkshire?

Any tips about which sources to look in first greatly appreciated!

Vicki Perry

I'm going to assume, for the sake of argument, that this family isn't
researched. What should you do? I'm also writing this on the basis that I
know nothing about the families involved. So just theoretical.

I had three immediate reactions:

(1) How feasible is the connection between the Irish Perrys families and
this one you've found? You may need (in your mind) to crystalise the
connection. For instance, when and where did the Perrys emerge in Ireland?
Does this relate to any known migration, like the seventeenth-century
settlement of Ulster or the Quaker diaspora. Gloucester to Bristol to Dublin
is is quite possible as a route in the seventeenth-century.

(2) Who gave the information in the Visitation? Each generation that passes
lessens its value.

(3) When did the local parish register start and is there a transcription?
Find that out. If early and available, then go through the transcript and
note every Hunter/Perry event. Then see if you can construct any coherent
family groupings. If there is only one grouping that emerges, then you've
got a likely recent arrival that would support the assertion in the
Visitation.

Do all this before you even start thinking about Yorkshire.
