Hello
I'm sorry I can't get my messages back on the same subject so I'm
trying by "Starting a new discussion". If anyone can tell me what I'm
doing wrong I'd be glad. As it is I'm clicking on "Reply", typing my
post into the box, then I click on "Send". My first reply about
Carlton worked, but since then nothing. This is a copy of what I sent
earlier this morning.

Hello Douglas
I replied to your post yesterday morning, but I can't see any trace of
it. I had the feeling I didn't have the technical side of these groups
under my belt. If the reply turns up later I'm sorry for this
repetition - although I don't have a copy of the first so am starting
from scratch. (big sigh)

First I thank you for your reply and the list of sources. I've got
many of those available by the internet, but most seem to throw up
more questions than answers. I've drafted a table in Word trying to
bring all the elements together chronologically and there's more that
doesn't fit than fits.

You write:
Also, you appear to have confused Maud de Ferrers's daughter, Joan de
Vivonne, wife of Ingram de Percy and Reynold Fitz Peter, Knt., with
that of Maud's younger daughter, Jeanne de Rochechouart, wife of Pons
de Mortagne, Vicomte of Aunay.
As I said, it's the French sources that say "Jeanne de Vivonne"

daughter of Matilda and William Le Fort, married Aimery X (c.1255-c.
1283) (see the Duguet article - it's in French but there's a
"simplified" family tree). Similarly it says Aimery X and Jeanne had
two children, Aimery XI (c.1272-1306) and Jeanne.

When you write: >They
had one son, Guillaume (clerk) [Canon of Limoges and Bourges], and six
daughters, Marguerite (wife of Arnaud Bochard), Agnès (wife of Pierre
d'Analhac), Isabelle, Jeanne (wife of Pons de Mortagne, Vicomte of
Aunay), Anelide, and Marquise. Sir Amaury de Rochechouart, Vicomte of
Rochechouart, died in Dec. 1288, and was buried at Terzay. He left a
will dated 25 June 1283. His widow, Maud, died 12 March 1298/9.

it sounds as though these were the children of Aimery IX and Matilda.
But in France all Aimery's eight children were by his first wife,
Jeanne d'Angles de Tonnay-Charente. What I'll do if you like, is write
up a summary of Duguet's account of the lives of the French
descendents of Matilda de Ferrers through her daughters Jeanne and
Sybil and their Rochechouart husbands. Perhaps it could help bring the
different versions together.

The further I go into this the bigger the gulf between the French and
English versions of these families gets. There seem to be very few
primary sources left in France thanks to the Revolution and an
apparently careless and wanton attitude to the past. I've been told
that when old buildings in Rochechouart have been cleared out for re-
use or destruction, old documents were piled into lorries and taken to
the tip. What primary sources do exist seem to be tucked up in boxes
in archive warehouses. The English archives help to pin some things
down, but it's not always clear which family member is concerned. e.g.
there are references to "Aimery(s) de Rochechouart" who turn out to be
from the nearby Mortemart branch. Then we have the creative spellings
which are awesome.

I'm going to copy this message in case it disappears too.
yours
Margaret
