Hannah family in Scotland

Legg inn av JMT » 17 jun 2007 07:01:28

Can anyone help me with an Alexander Hannah, born around 1560 in the
Sorbie, Scotland area?

I'm not absolutely positive about this connection, but I can't find a
thing on him.

Thanks!

Dear JMT,

I concur with Alex and Pat, this was most likely an Alexander
Hannay (or Ahannay). There are other references you might find
online, but I recommend reading MacKerlie's History of the Lands and
Their Owners in Galloway. Reference is made to an Alexander Ahannay,
'a burgess of Wigton, who purchased Kirkdale, parish of Kirkmabreck,
in 1523.' Further, there is a nephew (or great-nephew) Alexander
Hannay of Sorbie re: whom there was 'an instrument of sasine, dated
29th December, 1598, on a precept of clare constat, granted by the
said Alexander Hannay of Sorbie in favour of Robert Hannay, his son,
brother and nearest kin to William Hannay, of an annual rent of
?40.' [1]

Cheers,

John
