Hattons of Maryland to Wolfath, Count of Hatton

Legg inn av Lockehead » 16 jun 2007 03:48:52

This subject was breifly addressed on this thread back in 1999. Please
forgive me for reliving the past ;)

I was just given a genealogy of the Hatton family which goes back to
Sir Christopher Hatton back to Wolfath, Count of Hatton who rode with
William the Conqueror. It doesn't look right to me, especially showing
the parents of Sir Christopher Hatton to be John Hatton and Jane
Shute. It comes from a self-published book by the name of "The Hatton
Family: Genealogical Notes and Reminiscences" by Florence Hatton
Kelton 1969. Has anyone researched the family of Thomas Hatton
(1603-1655) or Elizabeth Hatton (his neice), who were early arrivals
to Maryland who is willing to share their findings? Has their been any
major findings on this line since 1999?

I am not familiar with Sir Christopher's family, but no such person as
"Wolfath, Count of Hatton" ever existed.

You might check what *their* underlying sources are, probably some Visitation.

Thank you both for responding. I still see no connections to the
Maryland Hatton family. I looked in "My Ancestors came with the
Conqueror" by Anthony J. Camp, and certainly see no Wolfath mentioned
anywhere in any of the lists. I think all of it is wishful thinking.
Thanks again.

See 'Stirnet', "HATTON1" for Wolfaith of Hatton as Hatton ancestor.

Well, actually "Wolfath or Wolfric" and certainly not Count. He is
father of "William or Walter", (Wolfath or Wolfric father of William
or Walter, not the most certain of pedigrees) and made son of the
Count of St Sauveur, which is without direct support. (It is based on
two different pieces of information. First, the local tradition has
several families, including Hatton, descend from a brother of Nigel of
Halton; second, an independent hypothesis that Nigel of Halton was son
of Niel of St. Sauveur, for which I have seen nothing but silliness
cited in support.)

Thank you for responding. I still don't see the conection on the
Stirnet pages. I am specifically looking for the connection to Thomas
Hatton or his neice. Thomas' parents were John Hatton and Margaret
Alstone (Austin?).

Barbara-

Thanks for responding. You all did a terrific job of the 400th
anniversary last month. We enjoyed it no end. John Hatton is mentioned
a few times in the few pages that I have, but there are no sources
given for any of this. There is a letter dated 1910 from a gentleman
who remembers what his father said about the family. No evidences
given at all. I would be happy to send you a copy if you would like.
