Dear Newsgroup ~

Previous threads have dicussed the evidence that Joan, wife of Sir
Thomas Gray (died 1400), of Heaton (in Norham), Northumberland, was
the daughter of John de Mowbray, Knt., 4th Lord Mowbray, by his wife,
Elizabeth de Segrave, and thus a descendant of King Edward I of
England.

There are at least two sources which identity Thomas Gray's wife,
Joan, as the daughter of Sir John de Mowbray. The first source is the
Visitation of the North taken c. 1480-1500 in which Joan is called
"Ionetta filia Iohannes Moubray." [Reference: Surtees Soc., 144
(1930): 53-54].

The second piece of evidence is the monumental inscription of her son,
Henry Gray, Esq., of Ketteringham, Norfolk, which identifies Joan as
the sister of [Thomas Mowbray], the Duke of Norfolk, who died of the
pestilence in 1399 in Venice. The inscription reads as follows:

"Here lyth Henr Gray, the sonne of syre Thm' Gray of Heto'n and Jone
his Wyfe that was systyr to the duke of Norff' yt deyid at Venys
[Venice]; and Emme the Wyfe of the forseyde Henr Gray dowtyr of Wyllm
Aplyerde of the sayde Countie of Norff' Esqyer on woys sowlis god have
Mercy." [Reference: Norfolk Archaeology, 26 (1936): 101-102].

Recently, I came across a third piece of evidence. In 1495 Elizabeth
Talbot, widow of John Mowbray, K.B., 4th Duke of Norfolk, wrote an
unidentified party and stated that Sir Harry Gray (died 1496), of
Ketteringham, Norfolk, and his nephew and heir, Thomas Martyn, were
"of my lordes [i.e., husband's] nere blode." [References: Gairdner,
Paston Letters 6 (1904): 155-156; Norfolk Arch. 4 (1855): 354]. The
parties were related as follows:

1.John de Mowbray, Knt., 4th Lord Segrave, m. Elizabeth de Segrave.
2. Thomas Mowbray, K.G., 1st Duke of Norfolk, m. Elizabeth Arundel.
3. John Mowbray, K.G., 2nd Duke of Norfolk, m. Katherine
Neville.
4. John Mowbray, K.G., 3rd Duke of Norfolk, m. Eleanor
Bourchier.
5. John Mowbray, K.B., 4th Duke of Norfolk, m. Elizabeth
Talbot.
2. Joan Mowbray, m. (1st) Thomas Gray, Knt., of Heton (in Norham),
Northumberland.
3. Henry Gray, Esq., of Ketteringham, Norfolk, m. Emme Appleyard
4. Henry Gray, Knt., of Ketteringham, Norfolk, m. Jane
(Scott) Yarde.
4. Eleanor Gray, m. Robert Martyn, Gent., of Sutton.
5. Thomas Martyn, b. c. 1466, living 1496.

For interest's sake, I've posted below a record of the family of Henry
Gray, Esq., of Ketteringham, Norfolk, the son of Joan (Mowbray) Gray.
His sole known descendant in 1496 was his daughter, Eleanor's son,
Thomas Martyn, who was disinherited by his uncle, Henry Gray the
younger. If anyone has any additional particulars regarding the
Martyn family, I'd appreciate hearing from them.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
