I wrote the following back in 2004, which I still think could bear
looking into (it would be nice to know for sure that the notation "in
New England, 1639" is found in a contemporaneous or near-
contemporaneous document) ...

I noticed something today that answers a question Doug brought up in
his recent _Register_ article on Percival-1 Lowell (the Oct. 2003
issue). _Visitations of Somerset ... 1531-1573-1591_ (edited by F.W.
Weaver, 1885), 120, mentions "Percival Lowle 1591, in New England
1639." I can't locate my copy of the October _Register_, but believe I
remember that Doug corresponded with someone in England, and was told
that the notation about Percival Lowle in New England was not found in
the original manuscript.

However, I've come across a relevant article, A.W. Vivian-Neal, "The
Visitations of Somerset, 1573, 1591: Notes on Ralph Brooke's
Manuscript" in _Proceedings of the Somersetshire Archaeological and
Natural History Society_, 84 (1938):59-99. Vivian-Neal describes a
manuscript, purchased by the Somerset Archaeological Society from the
Duke of Newcastle in 1938, containing both a copy of the 1573 Somerset
Visitation by Robert Cooke and the original 1591 Somerset Visitation
made by Ralph Brooke, Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms (1580) and York
Herald (1593). (I hope I am reporting this correctly). Brooke had a
copy made of the 1573 Visitation in preparation for his own tour
(1591); the whole manuscript (both visitations) is in the hand of a
scribe, with some notations by Brooke himself (Brooke's handwriting
was verified by Mr. Geijer, Rouge Dragon).

"The second half of the volume is occupied by the copy of the
visitation of 1591. This would seem to have been made during the tour
or soon afterwards by the same clerk who transcribed the earlier
visitation. It is also annotated [i.e., by Brooke], and though some of
the notes may have been inserted at a considerably later date, and
even in certain cases after Brooke had parted with the MS., the
memorandum touching Mr. Tynte's proof of arms is unlikely to have been
added long after the tour. The conclusion may perhaps be drawn from
this and other memoranda, that, apart from a few later interpolations,
the volume was finished in or about 1593" (p. 60).

Vivian-Neal notes that Richard Munday, who made the famous Harleian
copies of county Visitations _circa_ Charles I, appears to have "made
use of the very MS. which has now been acquired by the Somerset
Archaeological Society. After the account of the first sections in
Munday's Somerset volume (Harl. 1559), there follows in the catalogue
of the Harleian MSS. this entry--

To which is added, 3. The Visitation of the same
County made by Rafe Brooke alias Roug-Croix, in
anno 1591 : coppied by his own book remaining in
the hands of Sir William Neave, Clarenceaux. 1635.

Munday seems to have copied the whole MS. ... [recording] even
Brooke's tentative and casual notes and jottings from the final page.
Sir William le Neve, whom Munday calls Sir William Neave, survived the
Commonwealth and died in 1661. We have no record of whether le Neve
kept the MS. until his death, or of when it came into the possession
of the Dukes of Newcastle, or of how long it had been in their library
at Clumber before the sale of 1938" (p. 61).

At any rate, Vivian-Neal shows that p. 45 of the MS. is a pedigree of
"LOWLE of Clevedon." Very interestingly for our purposes, he notes an
anomaly that occurs later in the MS:

"Between 55a and 56 is a pedigree of LOWLE of Clevedon in a later
hand. This pedigree is endorsed 1639. It may have been inserted while
the volume was in the possession of Sir William le Neve. No arms
given."

I'm betting that the annotation "in New England, 1639" occurs on this
later, inserted page of the MS copy owned by the Somerset
Archaeological Society.

It may be this item, call number DD\SAS/C795/FA/18 at the Somerset

Maybe MAR would be willing to swing by Taunton on one of his jaunts
through the countryside and tell us what the MS. actually says.

Prolly too much to ask ...

Plotting out the chronology may help make this clearer:

1. 1573 -- Somersetshire Visitation made by Robert Cooke.

2. 1591 -- Ralph Brooke has copy made (by a scribe) of the Cooke
Visitation.

3. 1591 -- Brooke makes Visitation of Somersetshire, has it copied
(by the same scribe) into the same book immediately following the copy
of the Cooke Visitation of 1573.

4. 1635 -- book is in the hands of William le Neve, at which time it
is copied by le Neve or Richard Munday for the Harleian Collection.
[N.B. I would guess this is the copy Douglas had inspected for his
article.]

5. 1639 -- book may still have been in le Neve's hands. At any rate,
a pedigree of Lowle of Clevedon, without arms, but endorsed 1639, was
inserted into the book at this time.

6. Between 1639 and 1938, the volume came into the possession of the
Dukes of Newcastle.

7. 1938 -- book purchased from the Duke of Newcastle by the Somerset
Archaeological Society and described by Mr. Vivian-Neal in
_Proceedings of the Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History
Society_, 84 (1938):59-99.
