According to various sources, he was "a foreigner of low birth" who married Matilda (or Maude) de Lacy in 1240.
In some sources his last names is given as Janvile or Genevile, in other sources, this is the last name of Matilda's second husband (another husband).

The de Lacy's had Shropshire & Irish connections. My questions are, Who was he?, Where did he live? How did he gain royal favor?

Dear Richard ~

Peter of Geneva, the husband of Maud de Lacy, was the eldest son of
Humbert, Count of Geneva, by Agnes, daughter of Humbert III, Count of
Savoy. Thus, he was a near kinsman of Queen Eleanor of Provence, wife
of King Henry III of England. He first appears in connection with
English affairs in 1242, when King Henry III, being at Bordeaux, gave
him custody of the land and heir of William d'Aubeney. In 1245 he was
granted the manor of Dilwyn, Herefordshire and the custody of the land
formerly belonging to Richard de Kaynes till the dower lands of his
wife's inheritance should be delivered to him. In 1248 he was granted
custody of Windsor Castle, Berkshire. He died without issue shortly
before 29 June 1249. His arms were Sable, a lion rampant argent.

Thanks Doug,

I have another question. In Nov. 1248 Peter de Geneve was given simple protection until midsummer "for going beyond the seas, directed to all men of Ireland." Do you know his involvement in Ireland - war or diplomacy? Did this visit have something to do with his death?

Also, there is a record in the previous May 1248 when the King provides "simple protection for Henry de Bradelegh, Knight of Peter de Geneva, so long as he is in service of the said Peter." There appears to be no other protection documents for other associates of Peter de Geneva.

This Henry is my possible ancestor so I am interested in what these records indicate about him. What was the "protection" for. Was it a safe conduct through potentially dangerous territory? Diplomatic immunity? Was Henry's relationship to Peter a long term one or a short term assignment?

Richard
