Descents From Edward III For Christopher Beaumont (1575-1613

Oddly enough, considering that the family could trace their pedigree
back to the Conquest, the Yorkshire Beaumonts (of Whitley, Mirfield,
etc.) intersected very rarely with the bloodline of Edward III (or
even of Edward I), and of those that did in the 16th and 17th
centuries, the marriages almost always produced no issue. A rare
exception is the Beaumonts of Catton.

Thomas Beaumont (d. 1561) of Lascelles Hall, a manor in the West
Riding that had been in the family's possession since the first half
of the 15th century, had two wives. By the first one he had a son
Richard Beaumont of Lascelles Hall and Emley Park (d. 1570), from whom
the 17th century Beaumonts of Whitley descended. Thomas's second wife
was Anne (d. 1590), apparently the daughter of Thomas Langley of
Rawthorpe Hall (only a couple miles from Lascelles Hall). Thomas had
another son by his second wife, Edward Beaumont, born about 1540 or so
(he was a minor in 1555, and Thomas's first wife was living in 1537).
As a younger son, Edward would have to make his own way in the world,
and he moved to the neighboring parish town of Mirfield, less than 5
miles away, where another branch of the Beaumont family was seated.
Within the parish of Mirfield was Hopton Hall, the original seat of
the Hoptons of Armley, and it was into that family that Edward
married. On 3 August 1574, Edward Beaumont and Elizabeth, younger
daughter of Christopher Hopton, were wed. In an agreement reached
with his new father-in-law, Edward would enfeoff lands worth £10/year
for his wife's jointure, and would receive £20 from the Hoptons once
that was done. By June 1585, when Christopher Hopton made his will,
Edward still hadn't provided for his wife. As she died three years
after her father, he may never have done so. Later on in his life,
Edward removed to Catton (I haven't been able to determine whether it
was the one in the East or the North Riding), where he died in 1596.
Although he and Elizabeth had several children baptized at Mirfield,
only three survived to adulthood: son and heir Christopher, younger
son Thomas Beaumont of Selby (bapt. 23 April 1581, died 1615), and
daughter Anne Beaumont (baptized 7 July 1577), who married Michael
Portington of Portington.

Christopher Beaumont of Catton (baptized at Mirfield 7 August 1575,
buried at Catton 16 April 1613), succeeded his father at age 21, and
married at Otley on 31 March 1600, Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of
Robert Day of North Elmsall. No details of Christopher's life have
surfaced. After his death, his widow married 2ndly at Catton on 20
October 1614, Thomas Gerard of Barnard Castle. Of the five children
given by Christopher in the 1612 Visitation pedigree of the family,
the four daughters can be followed: Mary Beaumont married William
Thornbrough in 1630, Jane Beaumont married Henry Leeds in 1629,
Dorothy Beaumont married Marmaduke Poole of Flaxton in 1627, and
Elizabeth Beaumont was living in 1630. Whether the two sons, Richard
Beaumont (born 1610) and Edward Beaumont (baptized at Catton 17
January 1613), married and had children, or how many generations male
descendants of Edward Beaumont and Elizabeth Hopton continued on, is
not yet determined. Edward T. Beaumont in his c.1929 work 'Beaumonts
in History A.D. 850-1850' could trace the line no further. But just
in case some turn up, Christopher's two descents from Joan Beaufort
are given below.

Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmorland (c.1379-1440) had two daughters
(A1 & B1).

A1) Elizabeth Ferrers, Lady Greystoke (1393-1434), who had
A2) Ralph, 5th Lord Greystoke (c.1414-1487), who had
A3) Elizabeth Greystoke (d. 1490) m. 1)Thomas, 5th Lord Scrope of
Masham (c.1430-1475), and had
A4) Margery Scrope (d. aft. 1531) m. 1493 Sir Christopher Danby of
Thorpe Perrow (d. 1518), and had
A5) Sir Christopher Danby of Thorpe Perrow (1503-1571) m. Elizabeth
Nevill (see B4 below) and had
A6) Margaret Danby (c.1525-by 1585) m. Christopher Hopton of Armley
Hall, Yorks. (d. 1585), and had
A7) Elizabeth Hopton (d. 1588) m. 1574 Edward Beaumont of Catton (d.
1596), and had
A8) Christopher Beaumont of Catton (1575-1613)

B1) George Nevill, 1st Lord Latimer (c.1411-1469), who had
B2) Sir Henry Nevill (d. 1469) m. Joan Bourchier (d. 1470, descended
from Edward III but not thru Joan Beaufort), and had
B3) Richard Nevill, 2nd Lord Latimer (1468-1530) m. 1)1483 Anne
Stafford, and had
B4) Elizabeth Nevill (1500-15-) m. Sir Christopher Danby of Thorpe
Perrow (see A5 above)
