Castles of Your French Ancestors

Hello All,

For those of you with French noble and royal ancestors I thought you
might appreciate this site
http://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Dictionna ... i%C3%A8cle

This is Eugène Viollet-le-Duc's marvelous 9 volume _Dictionnaire
raisonné de l'architecture française du XIe au XVIe siècle_ from 1856.

It is a guide to French architecture and has many fine line drawings of
castles, cathedrals, monasteries, etc. Years ago I saw this set,
in very bad condition, in the stacks of a local university library.
Now anyone can browse through it at their leisure thanks to the team who
put this up as a French Wikipedia resource. The index is not yet
complete, but you can easily hunt for interesting images.

I like browsing through this set looking for drawings and explanations
of buildings, especially castles, associated with my ancestors.

For example, those of you who descend from Guy Le Bouteillier through
Catherine Baillon might want to look at the entry on Donjons for images
of La Roche-Guyon. For those who descend from Simon de Montfort through
one of the Le Neuf brothers, you might want to view the many images of
Carcassone scattered throughout. (And please, I do not want to hear how
Viollet-le-Duc damaged Carcassone by restoring it as a northern city
rather than a southern one, it is still a charming place.) Lastly, for
those of you with a newly acquired descent from Enguerrand III de Coucy
through Antoinette de Longueval--thanks to the research of Gagné and
Kokanosky--you might want to view the entry on Chateaux (but search
elsewhere for other images of this intriguing castle and do keep in mind
it is usually drawn as it existed when the Duc d'Orleans owned it after
the last Coucy heir sold it off).

By the way, Coucy was destroyed by the Germans in World War I. There
are still some very interesting features to see in the city and even the
rubble of the chateau is eerily intriguing, but Viollet-le-Duc's
drawings are available to us to help us image what it must have looked like.

There are not just drawings of castles. You might also find monasteries
and cathedrals your ancestors were associated with in some way.

This should be hours of fun for you.

Ce ne sont pas tous les nagivateurs qui reconnaissent les
accents. De plus, quand l'URL est coupée en deux, cela
ne fonctionne pas.
