Monuments at Stoke Poges: Hastings & Moleyns

I visited Stoke Poges this afternoon, and called in to see the
churchyard famously eulogised by Thomas Gray.

It contains the most impressive display of hatchments I have seen in
any parish church - 19 in all - as well as a collection of monumental
brasses and heraldry.

Leading off the chancel is the Hastings Chapel, erected in 1558 by
Edward, Lord Hastings of Loughborough, KG (d 1572), son of George, 1st
Earl of Huntingdon and Lady Anne Stafford. It contains much family
material, including a helmet with the Hastings crest on it.

I took photographs of the following items, which I am happy to pass
on:

(1) The brass of Sir William Moleyns, died 1425, sometimes styled 4th
Lord Moleyns, and his wife Margery (whose maiden name was
Whalesborough, according to the ODNB article on her son-in-law, but
there remains considerable doubt about this); their daughter Katherine
married John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk, thus making them ancestors
of the ducal Howard line and, via the Cecils and Cavendishes, of Queen
Elizabeth II.

(2) the Moleyns tomb in the nave, later used as an Easter sepulchre,
with its restored armorial display.

(3) the display of the arms of Lord Hastings, over the door into the
Hastings Chapel.

(4) the Hastings crest, surrounded by a Garter, displayed inside the
Chapel.

According to Roskell et al in HoP 1386-1421 vol III sub Moleyns, it
was their son and heir, William, whose wife was a Whalesborough;
Margery's maiden name appears to be unknown.
