Françoise de CONYNGHAM

Hello,

Every day i take a look at this very interesting and great forum. People
writing here are most "érudits" ones, and i really enjoy and
appreciate that, learning something each day, even if my native language
is not English. So, pardon me my poor and bad "vocabulaire" in this
language...
(I'm French)

Today, i hope to find some complementary information about the family
and relatives of the first spouse of my 8th. Great Grand-father,
"Françoise de CONYNGHAM" married on the 23th. of may 1620 with "André de
CONTADES" at the "Louvre Palace". (I know, it's not really medieval,
but... if it's tells something at someone here...)

I think the CONYNGHAM family has an old and well known "background"
among English/Scottish people, is it right ?...

So, if a very kind person could tell me more about this surname, the
descendancy, etc. that would be very nice.

Best regards,

Dear Melchior (Oedipe ?),

The Cunyngham or Conyngham (usual spelling Cunningham) family is
a well known Scots family, and you will note a number of posts to this
list concerning specific individuals or lines of descent that may be
of interest. The best background reading I would suggest is Sir James
Balfour Paul's Scots Peerage, where you will find an account of the
senior line of the family (including a sketchy account of the earliest
ancestors) of the Earls of Glencairn (vol. IV, pp. 222-253). You can
access this by using Google Books: a query of "Cunningham Earl
Glencairn" will bring up the first page of the specific volume, and
page 222.

You may do the same by using the following link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=EbEEAA ... rn#PPP1,M1

That aside, there are numerous records of individuals named
Cunyngham, Conyngham, etc. whose careers included a visit or more to
France. There is a alleged Sir Robert de Conyngham who served in
France ca. 1470, for example: I have no direct knowledge as to whether
this is valid, or if this individual continued to live in France
thereafter.

Should I find additional information that would relate to your
ancestress Francoise de Conyngham, or to other possible Cunyngham
links, I will certainly let you know.

Cheers,

John

Dear John,

Thank you for your kind and detailed responses to my "Coningham" enquiries.
