Tamworth Castle, and Lichfield Cathedral

Legg inn av Gjest » 26 apr 2007 21:28:11

I was in the Midlands today, and took photographs of Tamworth Castle,
formerly the seat of the Marmion and Freville families.

I also called in to Lichfield Cathedral, and took shots including the
tombs of:

(a) Bishop Walter [Peverel] de Langton, died 1321, with its surviving
mediaeval murals; he was the brother of Sir Robert Peverel, as has
been detailed here recently, and thus an ancestral uncle to many
listers;

(b) Dean Thomas Heywood, died 1492;

(c) Bishop Hugh de Pateshull, died 1241

(d) John Stanley of Pipe, son of Sir Humphrey Stanley, died July 1515
- replete with painted arms showing Stanley impaling "or, three
chevrons gules" [i.e. as per de Clare]; in the accompanying brass he
is described as "armigeri", so the published references to him as "Sir
John" (and to his death date as 1514) appear to be incorrect.

I am happy to forward copies to anyone interested.

Kind regards, Michael

Rose has kindly provided me with details of John Stanley's IPM from
Shaw's History and Antiquities of Staffordshire (1801), which quotes a
death date of 23 June (the eve of St John the Baptist) 1514. Although
the year is in conflict with the Lichfield MI, the date is not, for a
closer reading of the brass reveals it reads "obiit 9 kal. Jul." -
i.e. the ninth day before the Kalends of July = 23 June.

The year 1515 would nevertheless appear to be correct, if as seems
likely the IPM records for John Stanley at C 142/30/68-69
(Staffordshire & Warwickshire) and E 150/1122/6 (Warwickshire) dated 7
Henry VIII (22 April 1515 to 21 April 1516) are those for John Stanley
of Pipe. The references to these documents on PROCAT do not style
John as a knight, in accordance with the MI.
