New Henry Project pages - Dál Riata

Legg inn av Stewart Baldwin » 26 apr 2007 16:52:15

Pages have now been uploaded for the kings of Dál Riata, the early
Scottish ancestors of Henry II. These pages depart from the ten
generation limit which I had originally set for the project, but I
announced some time back that the ten generation limit is no longer in
effect. The URL for the index page is:

As usual, comments are welcome.

On the subject of the Scots royal family, have you seen Richard Oram's
"David I" (2004, Tempus)? In his notes he discusses whether or not
Mael Muire of Atholl was a son of Duncan I. Oram points out that Mael
Muire's son Malcolm married Hextilda, herself the granddaughter of
Donalban, and that if Mael Muire and Donalban were brothers (both
being sons of Duncan I) then this marriage would be within prohibited
degrees of consanguinity.

Stewart great work on this line back from Henry II. Allowed me to
correct several things in my own database (citing yours of course). I
note that here
http://sbaldw.home.mindspring.com/hproj ... rgu000.htm

on the last certain linkage near the middle of this page, where you
discuss the *stated* ancestry of Fergus, King of Dal Riata, died about
501 ?, you say that there are three versions of his ancestry.

Well here appears to be a fourth
http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/ancie ... s1.htm#top

They say Fergus son of Erc son of Ethedius son of Fincormachus (d 357)
son of Cormachus son of Athirco (d 250) son of Ethodius II (d 238) son
of Ethodus I (d c 192)

This does not appear to line up well with *any* of the three ascents
you give. I wonder if you'd comment on whether there are:
A) other ascents you didn't list OR
B) whether the ascent at stirnet is based on some faulty secondary
source which should not be used.

Thanks
Will Johnson

The Stirnet page you cited is worthless, based on falsifications of
late medieval/early modern origin. The fact that Stirnet would put up
a page of such garbage without qualifying it as such is one indication
of the low quality of that website. This pseudohistory added a bunch
of fictional kings back to a Fergus son of Ferchard who allegedly
lived ca. 300 BC. I have seen this material before, but I forgot
about it when I was composing the page for Fergus. The genealogies
included on my recently uploaded web page were many centuries earlier
than the one which you mentioned above. I will see what I can find
out about tracking these fake kings back to their source (Boece or
Buchanan?), because the page on Fergus really should include a short
paragraph debunking this nonsense.

I have now included such a paragraph on Fergus's page. I have also
made minor additions from Boece to the pages of Eochu ua Domnaill and
Eochu/Eochaid mac Áeda Find regarding alleged Pictish marriages of
those two kings.
