Ancestry of Anne Andrew (d. 1555)
Now that the Andrew(s) of this universe have become fashionable, I
decided to see if I could connect with the exalted bishop's family.
I have an ancestress Anne Andrew who m. a Valentine Pigot. I knew her
father's name but virtually no more, only that he came from Charwelton,
Northants but not who he was related to. Fortunately Chris Phillips's
Medieval Genealogy site led me to the earlier Visitation of Northants
and how to download it and I was away on my first pass genealogy for
this family.
As you will see from what follows, this is all from secondary sources,
so nothing is that firm. But the virtue of secondary sources is that
they give us clues on what to start looking for. Anyhow the question
is: does anyone know anything about this Andrew family, can they put any
light on the following fact-claims?
(PS: Sorry about the lack of dates. And I don't thing these farmers of
Northants had any relationship to my lord Bishop of Winchester.)

Yes this was an interesting bit. The editor, Metcalfe, of the 1584 and
1618-19 visitation book said he had culled things together from various
Harleian documents in order to get close to what was the original of
those visitations. But on the 1618-19 account of this Andrew family he
explicitly noted that these six mythical and early generations came only
from one document, Harleian MS 1184. These generations are not in the
earlier 1564 visitation and I am drawn ineluctably to the thought that
they were cooked up by some later Tudor or Stuart genealogist who
thought that the same name meant the same family; it is not even as if
they all lived in the same place to give them some deeds to check back
on.
Thanks for the gems there, it looks promising.
I have since found that Edward Cave's family is also in the 1564
Northants visitation, pp. 11-12, residing at Stanford on Avon, Northants
for three previous generations and thus with a high likelihood that they
had the deeds in their possession to verify previous family holders of
the property. So these Caves can be added to Anne Andrew's Ahnentafel.
Thanks for all the above, give a lot to be getting on with.
The Pigots led to the Tippings which led to Catherine Tipping inheriting
Pirgo which we were discussing a few days back. And one of Catherine's
Tipping aunts married a Lybbe which is how we happen to have a picture
of her (the Tipping aunt).
George is in ODNB which says his ancestry is unknown. Col Eusebius
Andrewes is too, his father is given as another Eusebius Andrewes but I
cannot see any connection between this one and the Eusebius Andrew who
was alive in 1618-19 (the Northants visitation of that year) and dead on
31 Jul 1619 (1681 Northants visitation).

Charwelton itself, which I visited this afternoon is even better. The
church is magnificent - little altered in the past 300 years. It is

several Andrewes monuments, the best being:
(1) The chest tomb of Sir Thomas Andrewes (d 1564) and his two wives,
Katherine Cave and Mary Heneage.
(2) the wall tablet to his son, Thomas, son of the above, and his two
wives, Frances Cotton and Mary Isham
(3) a brass to Thomas Andrewes (d 1496) and his wife Margery (sic) nee
Clavell
(4) a brass to Thomas Andrewes (d 1530) and his first wife Emma
Knightley (d 1490)
(5) a brass to Thomas Andrewes (d 1541) and his wife Agnes.
I photographed each of these, and will email you the results once I
have had time to sort and label them [that offer extends to anyone
else who might be interested]. Additionally, I bought the Church
Guide and leaflets about each of the monuments, which I shall put in
tomorrow's post.
George is shown is the Harleian MSS of the 1618-19 Visitation as the
second son of Thomas Andrewes (of Daventry) and the younger brother of
Eusebius, the father of the Colonel. Thomas Andrewes is himself given
as the sixth son of Anthony Andrewes, the third son of Thomas of
Charlwelton (d 1541). This would make Sir Eusebius of Charlwelton (d
31 July 1619; will proved PCC 1619, 91 Parker), himself grandson and
eventual heir of Sir Thomas, the second cousin of the elder Eusebius
and of George the Irish Bishop.
This should give you a few more interesting ascents!

Thanks for all the above, give a lot to be getting on with.
Although the Charwelton family do not seem to be connected with that
of Lancelot Andrewes, a cadet branch at Daventry appears to have
included the noted Royalists Colonel Eusebius Andrewes, executed at
Tower Hill in 1650, and George, Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin, both of
whom I think have DNB entries.

In fact in 1935 a copy of the 1681-2 Visitation had been found in a
private collection and was then published by the Harleian Society.
As you can see from the above, we do not know which Harleian MSS

I am in favour (no expense spared of course!) of re-editing and
