Mary Arthington (born 26 January 1648; died 20 December 1711) was the
co-heiress, along with her younger sister Frances (1651-1716), who
died unmarried, to their only brother Henry Arthington (1655-1682),
the last of an ancient line that had passed father-to-son for over 500
years.

The Arthingtons had been seated at Arthington in the parish of Adel in
West Yorkshire (7 miles from Leeds) since the late 12th century, when
the paternal ancestor founded a nunnery there. Though the family made
marriages in the late 15th/early 16th centuries with such established
Yorkshire gentry familes as the Mauleverers of Wothersome, the
Goldesboroughs of Goldesborough, and the Nortons of Norton Conyers, it
wasn't until the middle of the 16th century that they intermarried
with the bloodline of Edward III. It may be noteworthy that the first
of the family to do so, Sir William Arthington, who took for his wife
in about 1565, Katherine, the youngest daughter of Sir William Ingleby
of Ripley, was the only head of the family to ever receive the honor
of knighthood.

Male line Arthingtons who descended from Sir William and Katherine
Ingleby continued on into the 18th century thanks to Ralph Arthington,
a younger son of A9 below, but the senior line estates were eventually
inherited by Mary and her sisters. Mary married Thomas Worsley of
Hovingham Hall, Yorkshire, and the Arthington name and estates passed
into that family. Mary and Thomas are direct paternal line ancestors
of H.R.H. The Duchess of Kent.

Mary Arthington has several lines from Edward III, with 5 thru Joan
Beaufort.
