Descents From Edward III For Slingsby Bethell, Lord Mayor of
Slingsby Bethell (1696-1758), a sugar merchant in London, was not a
GARD, but still had a role in the American colonies. He was in a
business partnership with the Massachusetts merchants Edward and
Josiah Quincy and their brother-in-law Edward Jackson, who named their
ship 'Bethell' after him. He was also one of the original Trustees
for the colony of Georgia. Bethell became an Alderman in London, then
on 9 November 1755, he became Lord Mayor of London. He had succeeded
to the family estates in Yorkshire on the death of his childless elder
brother in 1747.
The Bethells were a Herefordshire family originally, and likely a
Welsh one before that (the name derives from the Welsh 'ap Ithell').
Sir Hugh Bethell (d. 1612) was surveyor of the East Riding to Queen
Elizabeth, who granted him the Yorkshire manor of Ellerton. Sir Hugh
had no son, only a daughter, so he took Walter Bethell, the 3rd son of
his elder brother Nicholas Bethell of Maidenhead, Herefordshire, under
his wing and left him Ellerton on his decease. Walter continued his
uncle's position as surveyor of the East Riding (now to King James),
and was the first of the family to marry into the Edward III
bloodline. Walter's prospects of inheriting Ellerton must have been
pleasing enough to Henry Slingsby of Scriven that he gave his second
daughter Mary in marriage to the young man in about 1600.
Walter (later knighted) and Mary had a large family of 10 children who
survived infancy, but though several of their descendants became
merchants, none of the male line Bethells appear to have emigrated
permanently out of England. The family is covered (though not quite
thoroughly) in Ruvigny's 'Plantagenet Roll' series. Slingsby Bethell,
Lord Mayor of London, has been referred to as the last of the Bethells
of Ellerton (his sister's son inherited the manor), but there may be
further male line descendants of Sir Walter Bethell and Mary Slingsby,
as I haven't been able to determine yet the fates of the 5 younger
brothers of William Bethell of Swindon (see A10 below), save that one
of them, another Slingsby Bethell (b. 1657), married one Sarah -----,
and had at least one child, a daughter Frances, born in London in
1698.
Slingsby Bethell the Lord Mayor has several descents from Edward III,

Re: Descents From Edward III For Slingsby Bethell, Lord Mayo
On Slingsby Bethell I am interested in two loose ends.
1) What is the immediate ascent of that Frances Vavasour who appears
in position 19 in his pedigree and who married Henry Slingsby of
Scriven ?
2) What is the immediate ascent of that Elizabeth Brooke who is
Slingsby Bethell's mother ?
Thanks

For Frances Vavasour see (as a starting point) the Stirnet site - under
Vavasour3. These Vavasours [of Weston] are also covered in pedigrees in
various Yorkshire visitations.
Elizabeth Brooke [or Brookes] was the daughter of Sir John Brookes, 1st
Baronet, and his wife Mary, dau. of Sir Hardress Waller the regicide.

His namesake, another Slingsby Bethel (1617-1697), the son of Walter

Frances Frankland and of Willaim Bethel who married Bridget Bourchier.
Their father Walter died in 1623. This Slingsby Bethel married Mary Burrell.
He was Sheriff of London in 1680 but is sometimes referred to
erroneously as Lord Mayor of London. He famously appears in John
Dryden's poem, Absalom and Achitofel.

a little of the earlier Bethel and Frankland families.

an entry for him in the new Oxford DNB.
The middle (second) Slingsby Bethell (b. 1657) is very elusive.

Yes, it's a little confusing. Dugdale's 1665 Visitation pedigree of
the family spells their name with two 'L's, but the ODNB bio of the

Yep, that's the guy who I'm trying to discover more about. Per the
IGI, he was baptized at Kirkby Overblow 7 May 1657, the 4th son and
7th child of William Bethel and Bridget Bourchier. Also per the IGI,
Frances Bethell, daughter of Slingsby and Sarah Bethell, was baptized
at St. Botolph without Aldgate, London 27 November 1698. Her father
had to have been the Slingsby who was born in 1657, as the Slingsby
born in 1617 died in February 1697, and the Slingsby who became Lord
Mayor of London in 1755 was baptized at Kirkby 16 March 1696.
The later histories of Slingsby (b. 1657), and his brothers Bourchier
Bethel (bap. at Kirkby 18 May 1652), Walter Bethel (bap. at Kirkby 21
Apr. 1653), Nicholas Bethel (bap. at Kirkby 5 Sept. 1658), and Hugh
Bethel (bap. at Kirkby 5 Oct. 1659), I haven't been able to determine
- I couldn't find death dates on the IGI for any of them. They may
have, like their brother Slingsby, married and had children.
This one is an error. The Walter Bethell who married Mary Vavasor was
baptized at Alne, Yorkshire on 3 July 1628, married 1st at St.
Martin's, Coney Street, York on 10 March 1650, Anne Palmes of Naburn
(buried St. Martins 22 March 1623); married 2nd on 29 January 1656,
Mary Vavasour of Spaldington (buried St Martins 23 December 1659);
inherited Ellerton and the other Bethel family estates January 1663;
and never emigrated to Virginia or anywhere else. He had one
daughter, Mary Bethel (died unmarried, buried 21 April 1687) by his
1st wife, and a son Hugh Bethel (aged 7 in Sept. 1665) and a daughter
Frances Bethel (bap. at St. Martins 10 November, buried there 11
November 1659), by his 2nd wife. No son named Slingsby. I don't have
a death date for Walter or his son Hugh, but as Ellerton was
eventually inherited by Walter's youngest brother William Bethell
(1648-1694), it can be assumed neither left any issue.
An article on the Bethells in 'The Yorkshire Genealogist and
Bibliographer', Vol. II (1890), claims that the family line terminated
with "Hugh Bethell, of Ellerton and Swindon ...with whose decease in
1747 the Bethells of Ellerton terminated." This isn't exactly true,
as Slingsby Bethell the Lord Mayor in 1755, survived his older brother
and inherited the family estates, not dying until 1758. The estates
then passed to descendants of their sister, but that doesn't mean the
male line of Sir Walter Bethell of Ellerton and Mary Slingsby had died
out by that point, as its quite possible that Slingsby Bethel (b.
1657), and his brothers above, had descendants, some of whom may even
have emigrated to the colonies, especially with all of the mercantile
connections of the family.

Don't forget Bethel, with one L. That branch of the family mostly (but
not exhaustively) used only one L.
Yes, it's a little confusing. Dugdale's 1665 Visitation pedigree of
the family spells their name with two 'L's, but the ODNB bio of the
first Slingsby Bethel spells it with only 1 'L'.
Do you mean this one?

Or maybe this one?

Father: Walter BETHEL b: Abt 1620 in of Virginia
Mother: Mary VAVASOR b: Abt 1620- Hide quoted text -
This one is an error. The Walter Bethell who married Mary Vavasor was
baptized at Alne, Yorkshire on 3 July 1628, married 1st at St.
Martin's, Coney Street, York on 10 March 1650, Anne Palmes of Naburn
(buried St. Martins 22 March 1623); married 2nd on 29 January 1656,
Mary Vavasour of Spaldington (buried St Martins 23 December 1659);
inherited Ellerton and the other Bethel family estates January 1663;
and never emigrated to Virginia or anywhere else. He had one
daughter, Mary Bethel (died unmarried, buried 21 April 1687) by his
1st wife, and a son Hugh Bethel (aged 7 in Sept.
