Descents From Edward III For Bridget Belasyse of Brancepeth

Bridget Belasyse (1735-1774), heiress of Brancepeth Castle in co.
Durham, is the alleged jilted lover of Bonny Bobby Shafto in a song/
rhyme that became quite well known in the north of England. She is
said to have died of a broken heart at the news of Shafto's marriage
to another woman. As Shafto married on 18 April 1774, and Bridget
died in London on the preceding 6th of April, it's easy to see how the
legend originated. Bridget was a ripe age 38 and Shafto age 42 in
1774, so these were far from star-crossed young lovers, and pulmonary
tuberculosis seems the far likelier cause of death than a broken
heart, though she may well have been strung along by Shafto for years.

The Belasyses were a family that originated in County Durham, and
seated themselves at Henknoll there by the late 14th century. They
entered Yorkshire when Anthony Belasyse, chaplain to Henry VIII, was
granted Newburgh Priory in the parish of Coxwold after the
Dissolution. As a cleric, Anthony's heir was his nephew William
Belasyse, and the prospect of the Newburgh inheritance was enough for
Sir Nicholas Fairfax of Gilling to marry his eldest daughter Margaret
to young William by 1550. William inherited Newburgh from his uncle
in 1552, and founded a dynasty that eventually Viscounts and Earls
Fauconberg. William's third son Brian Belasyse returned to County
Durham, and took Morton House, an old Belasyse property, as his seat.

Thanks to John Higgins, Bridget has an additional descent from Edward
III, given as Line G.
