Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew the English name for the Latin place-name
Kaerlindcoit? Does anyone know if there are any good online resources for
Latin versions of English place-names?
Thanks
Vicki

Modern Lincoln.

MA-R

The Latin (or, rather, the Romano-British) name for modern Lincoln was
Lindum; Lincoln is a corruption from Lindum Colonia.

The Welsh monk Nennius, writing in the early 9th century gives a list
of the twenty-eight towns of sub-Roman Britain. Among these is Caer-
Luit-Coyt, long identified by authors Lincoln, although Ralph Thoresby
in the preface to Ducatus Leodiensis argues that the place referred to
is actually Leeds.

Later thinking is that the place name refers to the Roman Letocetum,
modern-day Wall in south Staffordshire.

Take your pick.

Regards,

John
