Stemma for De Scalers of Cambs & Herts

Legg inn av Gjest » 02 apr 2007 23:20:56

A first draft of a pedigree of the Scalers/Scalariis family of
Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. Where individual sources are not
cited, they are from the relevant VCH entries. Apologies for not
having checked Keats-Rohan on this family.

1. Hardwin de Scalers, a very considerable landowner by 1086, holding
property inter alia in Cambridgeshire and in Hertfordshire, much of it
in chief; left two sons, between whom his estates were divided (VCH
Cambs & Herts, various):

2a. Hugh de Scalers, had issue:

3. Henry de Scalers, had issue:

4. Hugh de Scalers; held 'Challers' manor at Reed, Herts, claimed
unsuccessfully by his cousin William, 1195-1199, and an estate at
Hinxworth, Herts, unsuccessfully claimed by William de Scalers, 1207-8
(VCH Herts); had issue:

5a. Henry de Scalers, died without issue in Jerusalem, on pilgrimage
(VCH Herts, sub Reed)

5b. Geoffrey de Scalers, did homage for Reed, 1221; living in 1258;
had issue:

6. Geoffrey de Scalers, dead by 1267 (VCH Herts, sub Reed); married
Eleanor, who married secondly Robert Angot. Issue:

7. Thomas de Scalers, born circa 1263; died 1341 (VCH Herts, sub
Reed); possibly the one of that name married to Elizabeth de Turnberg
[Thornborough] (Vis Cambs, sub St George); left issue, de Scalers of
Reed. This family bore arms: gules, six scallops or (VCH Herts, sub
Reed).

2b. Richard de Scalers, had issue:

3. Stephen de Scalers, with his wife gave 80 acres at West Wratting to
St Mary & St Radegund's Priory, Cambridge when their daughter entered
that nunnery, c1156 (Jesus College MSS); died 1168 (VCH Cambs, sub
Little Shelford); married Juliana. Issue:

4a. Sibyl de Scalers, entered a nunnery at Cambridge, circa 1156

4b. William de Scalers, confirmed his father's gift of land at West
Wratting (Jesus College MSS); attempted to recover Challers manor at
Reed; died 1199 (VCH Cambs, sub Little Shelford); married Sibyl, named
in her husband's confirmation (Jesus College MSS). Issue:

5. William de Scalers, attempted to recover estate at Hinxworth; died
circa 1222 (Cal. Fine Rolls, 21 & 27.8.1222); left issue:

6. Richard de Scalers, heir to his father, 1222 (Cal. Fine Rolls,
10.9.1222); died circa 1231 (Cal. Fine Rolls, 21.2.1231 for details
relating to his will); apparently bore arms: argent, a fess between
three annulets gules (Surtees Soc Pub 41, sub Fravell [sic]); left
issue:

7. Lucy de Scalers, heiress; her custody and marriage sold for 200
marks (Cal. Fine Rolls, 13.2.1231); married circa 1232 (Pipe Roll,
Cambs & Hunts, 16 Henry III) by her guardian, Sir Baldwin de Freville,
who had custody of her lands, 1230 (Pipe Roll, Cambs & Hunts, 30 Henry
III); left issue - Freville of Little Shelford and Munden Scalers.

Rosie Bevan has very generously looked up Keats-Rohan on this family,
and has also provided details of Farrer's reconstruction. In addition
to some further collaterals whom I will try to deal with in a seperate
post shortly, these two sources add that Hardwin's wife was named in
the Charter Rolls of Henry II as Odelina, and that the wife of
Richard, the last male of the Shelford line, was named Isabella.

In a slight correction to Keats-Rohan's text, it iseems clear from the
primary sources that Lucy was the great-great granddaughter of Stephen
(died 1168) rather than his great-granddaughter (DD, p 703).

Farrer largely confirms the above reconstruction, with the exception
that the identification of Thomas de Scalers' wife Elizabeth as a
daughter and coheir of Aymon de Turnbergh is an addition.

Many thanks, Rosie, for your help.

Dugdale's Baronage has an entry for "Scales" which includes an
overview of Hardwin's family (although it doesn't mention him); it is
fairly basic, and conflates the two Williams into one. It is useful,
however, in that it does provide primary source references for its
various notes.
