OT -- Surname Criley ... is it German?

This is more off topic that even I usually go--but I started wondering
about it recently. My great-great-great-great grandmother was
Catherine Criley, wife of Frederick Sparr. I had always assumed the
name was German because her husband was German and most of the
relatives seemed to be German, but perhaps it isn't in fact German.
Could it be Irish? Does anybody know? My line from this lady goes
through the Sparr, Hiner, Wengert, and Macy families (Catherin's
daughter Mary was the wife of Leonard Hiner of Whiteside County, IL).

(explicitly states they were German; incorrectly calls gives first
name as "Elizabeth")

I got an email stating that it _is_ German, after all, and that "the
original German form should be 'Krey' or the dimunitive 'Kreile',
which is low German <like in Katzenjammer-kids> meaning Craw or <small
craw>."

Trying to reconstruct why I thought it might be Irish, I think it had
something to do with the 1880 Census entry for her son-in-law Leonard
Hiner, which stated his mother was born in Ireland, I believe. That
was news to me, because everything I knew indicated it would have to
have been in Pennsylvania. Then I wondered if his wife's mother had
been Irish, perhaps, and that the census taker got something confused.

But now I think it must have been the mother-in-law (Mrs. McFadden) of
Leonard Hiner's son Martin, who may also have been living in the
household, who was Irish.

In case any one is interested (probably [? definitely] not) in the
Macy-Wengert connection ...

(I post a lot of these things here so I can find them again. It's
much cheaper than renting space on the web [and so thoroughly
indexed]. I'm sure I'll be crucified for admitting this .. :-) )

"Mr. Macy was married while in business at Cedar Falls, at Greenville,
Bond County, Illinois, to Miss Fraida Robert, daughter of James
Robert, a farmer of that county, and a native of Switzerland."

Freda or Fraida Robert, my great-grandfather's first wife, was born
Freda Robert-Nicoud (they dropped the Nicoud in America), which is a
surname still found in certain areas of Switzerland. Her mother was a
member of the Zbinden family. Does anybody know anything about these
family names (contact me offlist if you like ...)?

I have a copy of some handwritten pages from the 1840s showing that
Freda's mother Marie was daughter of Christian Zbinden and Marie nee
Mutzenberg, in case that jogs any memories.
