This group has been of tremendous help to me in researching my
medieval family history and searching the archives has proved
invaluable. I am very grateful to all those who have helped me with my
research.
I notice that we have 433 members in this group and I imagine that
they (like me) find the garbage we sometimes have to wade through to
find the relevant posts irritating in the extreme.
Presumably they were all hoping that the puerile behaviour of a few
members would fizzle out and we could go back to reading about
medieval genealogy and contributing when we feel able.
It shouldn't be necessary for groups to be moderated and intelligent
adults should be able to control their outbursts. I can only imagine
that the few who seem to think we are interested in their childish
rantings don't read their messages through or they'd realise that the
senders look foolish in the extreme.
We have some very knowledgeable people in this group and I admire
their scholarship. I have recommended this group to others with
medieval links but I am now having to warn potential new members that
this group degenerates to what is basically spam fairly regularly.
Getting back to family history....if anyone on here has Lincolnshire
Fines/Fynes or Clinton-Fines/Fiennes roots and wishes to join a group
for that, let me know. We already have several members and we are
sharing information in a civilised fashion.
Thanks again to all you nice people out there.

You are apparently reading the posts by email from the GEN-MED list or via a
news server - if instead you follow SGM through Google Groups (at
http://groups.google.com.au/group/soc.g ... vc=2&hl=en)
you will not have this problem of wading through unwanted messages, as you
can choose to open only those topics that are of interest, bypassing all the
rest.

Having followed my own link I see that your number of 433 for subscribers is
taken from the Google "Group info", so the above advice was
unnecessary...sort-of.
If you already use Google groups, it's a deep mystery why you should
"sometimes have to wade through" messages that don't interest you to find
the ones that do. Perhaps you could set your viewing font to a larger size
so that the subject lines are easier to read.

Perhaps I was naive to assume that, being interested in medieval
genealogy, any message sent to the site just might be either of
interest or informative.
I do skim through the dross but would prefer the totally off topic
drivel or the nasty snide bickering to be kept as the private
squabbles that they should have been in the first place.

Most of the 433, or however many, seem to have ingenuity enough to hit
the "delete" key or just refrain from opening messages with headers
that suggest non-genealogical content if that is their preference.

I do not agree with you that the opening of these squabbles should be

agreeing to differ.
