Questionabloe Ruthven lineage

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 31 mar 2007 22:51:15

William, 1st Baron Ruthven, married Isabel Livingstone, but by the time he married they already had two sons. The two sons were legitimised in 1480 and the elder was the father of the 2nd Baron Ruthven and ancestor of the Earls of Gowrie. I am interested in the second son.

According to SP John Lindsay or Ruthven (his mother had first married a Lindsay) was still alive in October 1548. He married a lady with the unusual name Libra and they had issue "so far as known one son", Alexander, named in 1548 with his father and mother, but nothing further has been ascertained in regards to him.

-----------------------------------

I received a family tree which seems quite a few years old ( 20th century) which gives additional details.
Here this John is called John Lindsay Ruthven and he married (Libra ?) a daughter of Beatrix sister of the Archbishop of St.Andrews and they had a son James.
This James had a son William and then this continues till the present.

---------------------------------

The Scots Peerage only mentions Alexander as a son of John Lindsay Ruthven but implies there could be more children. Would anyone know how to establish that the lineage on this family tree is correct?

With many thanks

Burke's Peerage (sub Carlisle, sic) adds some details. naming the

second son as John, of Cultvainy and Drumdrane, "which lands he
received from his father for renouncing the name of Lindsay and taking
the name and arms of Ruthven"; he is said to have married Libra
Livingston (sic), and to have had a daughter Margaret, married by 1499
as his second wife to the 2nd Earl of Buchan, by whom she left issue.
No son is mentioned. Perhaps the descent of the two estates named
might yield further proof.

RECTE: Margaret, Countess of Buchan was *sister* not daughter of John
Ruthven. Burke's merely states he "had issue" and does not name any
of them.
