Dear List members,
According to the on-line British History
Victoria County History of Lancashire concerning the Township and Manor of
Bickerstaff /Bickerstath ( Volume 3 (1907) pp 276-282 Sir William Atherton, kt of
Atherton, Lancaster died 1389 and left by Joan, daughter of Ralph , Lord Mobberly
a younger son Sir Nicholas Atherton, kt d 1420 who married Joan, daughter and
heiress of Adam de Bickerstath. They had 4 children Sir Nicholas Atherton of
Bickerstaff d 1424 married Douce, daughter of Hamlet Mascy of Rixton and had
a son Henry Atherton who had sons Hamlet , William, Henry and Charles. Henry
was alive 1461 and apparently 1474 but Hamlet succeeded by 1478 , married
Alice Stanley and was succeeded by his son Thomas who died in 1513. Anyway, the
first Sir Nicholas Atherton had 3 younger sons, Ralph Atherton died abt July
1461 , James and Hugh
Ralph Atherton had 4 illegitimate children including a
son Piers Atherton and a daughter Janet who married Gilbert Walsh. In 1506
Ralph Atherton son and heir of Humphrey Atherton whose father Piers was the
illegitimate son of Ralph who died 1461 tried to obtain a portion of the
Bickerstath estate, presumedly because Thomas had no sons, only a daughter Margaret who
died in 1517/18 , wife of James Scarisbrick, their daughter Elizabeth
Scarisbrick married Peter Stanley.
As far as I know the only Atherton family using the name
Humphrey is that of Winstanley, but there could be a lot of children I haven`t
heard of.. If Ralph of 1506 did have a wife and children, they maqy have
included the father of Edmund of Winstanley fl 1548 and the James who is referred to
as the father of Humphrey Atherton who in 1593 was taken to court with wife
Alice and son and heir Edmund by Edward de Winstanley and his wife Alice over
the messuage of Billinge. Itb was awarded to Atherton in 1596 and Winstanley
sold his property to James Bankes. Edmund Atherton became the father of
Humphrey Atherton and died in 1613 in Wigan.
Sincerely,
James W Cummings
