Tracing Smyths

Legg inn av SomersetSue » 24 mar 2007 14:06:11

Hi folks

I'm wondering if anyone has looked into the genealogy of the Smyth/
Smith family of Lincolnshire?
My ancestor Arthur Fines (Clinton) was the son of Sir Henry Fiennes
Clinton of Kirkstead and Elizabeth Hickman. Both of them came from
families of staunch Protestants and Elizabeth was the niece of William
Hickman of Gainsborough in whose home Puritans met secretly.
Arthur Fines (aka Clinton) married a Mary Smythe in 1677 in Mareham Le
Fen, Lincolnshire.

It occurred to me that as Arthur was the grandson of an Earl and had
some lands of his own, he was likely to have married someone in his
own social circle. I then wondered if Mary Smyth just might be
connected in some way to the John Smyth/Smith who preached in
Gainsborough or possibly the Captain John Smith of Pocahontas fame.

I've googled and done some hunting in online Ebooks but not had much
luck yet. Maybe someone here knows of a Mary Smyth who'd be about the
right age? The IGI has one who was the daughter of a Thomas Smith born
14th April 1655 in Tattershall, Lincolnshire who'd be the right age
and living in the right area. That Thomas Smith looks likely to be the
one down as a son of George Smith. The IGI has Thomas baptised 22 JUN
1617 Tattershall and there is a George Smith marrying a Barbaraye Kyme
09 JUN 1611 Tattershall.

Do any of those names seem familiar to anyone please?

Best wishes
Sue

Sue the only date I was able to pick up that was useful in your post
was the 1677 marriage date of Arthur Fiennes-Clinton to Mary Smythe.

Can you give us more details on the ascent of the Fiennes-Clinton
family of Kirkstead and also on more specifically how your Elizabeth
Hickman ties to the Hickmans of Gainsborough family ? I have both
these families in my database but can't tie your line into them.

Thanks

Hi Will

Elizabeth Hickman was the granddaughter of Anthony Hickman and Rose
(Locke). Both of these families were merchant adventurers and Rose was
to write her memoirs in old age when she was then known as Rose
Throckmorton.
Anthony and Rose had several children. One was William Hickman who was
to buy Gainsborough Old Hall. Another was Doctor Henry Hickman who was
the father of Elizabeth.
In the memoirs of Sir Henry Clinton Fynes (son of the second Earl of
Lincoln) Sir Henry speaks of how he came to marry Elizabeth Hickman
daughter of Doctor Henry Hickman as his second wife and of how she was
staying at the time at her uncle's home in Gainsborough.

One of the sons of Sir Henry by Elizabeth Hickman was Arthur. He is
sometimes referred to as Fines and at others as Clinton or Clinton
Fynes. He is mentioned in Sir Henry's will and I am transcribing the
marriage licence of Arthur to Mary Smyth. On that he is called Arthur
Clinton aka Fines of Kirkstead.

The younger sons of the younger sons in the Fynes/Fines family tended
to stay in the Tattershall, Kirkstead areas of Lincolnshire and my own
branch went via Timberland and Great Hale to Gedney. This site
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=linclinks has many of the
later family groups and how they descend from the 2nd Earl.

Best wishes
Sue
