Eva de St. John heiress of William de Roos

In connection with the de Ros family, can anyone work out this little
puzzle:

Proof of the age of Roger, son of John de Shelvestrode, kinsman and
heir of Eva de St. John, heiress of William de Roos, of Hamlake,
deceased, taken at Petworth, 24 July, 29 Edw. III. (1355). The
deponents say that he was born at Lotegareshale (Lurgeshall), on the
day of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (24th June), 8 Edw. III.
(1334), and baptised in the Church of St. Lawrence there. Thomas de
Camoys (of Broadwater), Roger de Loxleye, and Eva, widow of Edmund
(sic) de St. John, were his sponsors. [Sussex Archaeological
Collections, Vol XII, London, 1860, p 29] (on Google Books)

It's not clear which William de Ros of Helmsley is being referred to.

Eva Dawtrey (St. John), was the grandmother of the above Roger
Shelvestrode - but how was she the heir of William de Ros of Helmsley?

Eva married three times, first Roger de Shelvestrode, then William
Paynel (Lord Paynel) and finally Edward St.John.

Nowhere can I find any connection with the de Ros family in her
marriages.

Her father was John Dawtry (de Alta Ripa) of Bigenor, Sussex and her
mother is said to be Elizabeth de la Stane of Fisherton de la Mere,
Wiltshire, but again no de Ros connections.

Has anyone any ideas on this?

Regards,

John

This statement is clearly a mistake. The abstract of the original writ
of 14 July 1355 [CIPM X no.271] says,
"Writ to the escheator to take the proof of age of the said Roger,
kinsman and heir of Eva de Sancto Johanne, who held by knight's
service of the heir of William de Roos of Hamelake, a minor in the
king's wardship."

The heir of William de Roos (d. 1352) was without question his younger
brother Thomas de Ros of Helmsley who was at the time aged 18.
Presumably Eva was the widow of Edmund de St John who died in 1347,
godson of Edward II [CP XI:325 note (a).]

Hope this clears up your mystery.

Cheers
