I've seen the parents of Brian Snawsell of Bilton, Yorkshire who m.
Elizabeth Wentworth (- bef. 4 Sept. 1591, dau of Thomas Wentworth and Anne
Dynley) listed online as Thomas Snawsell and Anne Mauleverer (no
reference). Some make this Anne Mauleverer a daughter of Sir Richard
Mauleverer of Allerton and Joan/Jane Plumpton (dau. of Robert Plumpton and
Agnes Gascoigne) - again, no references. Last month Brad Verity mentioned
on this list that Sir Richard Mauleverer and Jane Plumpton were contracted
to marry in 1492 (posted 2 Feb 2007), but not whether descendants are known
for them. Does anyone know whether the mother of Brian Snawsell who m.
Elizabeth Wentworth was an Anne Mauleverer, and if so, how she fits in
with the Mauleverers?
Thanks,

Dear Eliza,
The pedigree of Mauleverer of Allerton taken by herald Thomas Tonge in
the Visitation 1530 assigns only two children (sons) to Sir Richard
Mauleverer and Joan Plumpton -- Thomas and Ralph. There was no
subsequent official Visitation pedigree of the family until 1585,
taken by herald Robert Glover. In that one, a third child (daughter)
is given to the couple -- Anne, wife to Thomas Snawsel of Bilton.
That Anne was left out of the 1530 Visitation pedigree, when she would
have been born at that point, doesn't mean she was not their
daughter. That particular pedigree is very bare bones, and doesn't
assign daughters to any previous Mauleverer generations.
I haven't had the opportunity to examine the Snawsells of Bilton, so I
don't know how Anne Mauleverer of Allerton fits into that family
chronologically. I do know her mother Joan Plumpton was the firstborn
child of her own parents (Sir Robert Plumpton and Agnes Gascoigne),
born about 1480. So Joan Plumpton Mauleverer's three children could
have been born at any point in the span of 1495-1525.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, --------Brad

Per the IPM of Seth Snawsell of Bilton, taken 19 Oct. 1537, his
grandson and heir Thomas Snawsell (son of his son John Snawsell,
deceased) was age 27, so born 1509/10. This fits in nicely with the
chronology of Anne Mauleverer of Allerton, whose mother Joan Plumpton
was born about 1480. Per the IPM, Seth Snawsell died on 20 May 1537.
His will, dated 14 May 1537, and proved 12 June 1537, makes no mention
of his grandson and heir Thomas. The only family Seth mentions are
his (second) wife Katherine, and his son by her, William Snawsell.

Yes but I'm not sure that the birth year of her mother has been

her parents marriage date has been given as 1487 "first wife". I cite
genealogics and also the DNB "Plumpton, William" although I'm not sure
which one gives that date (if any!)

When Robert Plumpton made a will on 13 July 1482, he bequested 400
marks for the marriage of his daughter Jane, then his only child.
Since his eldest son and heir William Plumpton was married at age 12
to Isabel Babthorpe (the contract was dated 11 May 1496 and the
marriage solemnized on 29 Sept. 1496), Joan (Jane) Plumpton was
probably age 12 when her marriage contract was drawn up in 1492, so
born about 1480. See Thomas Stapleton (ed.), 'Plumpton
Correspondence' (Camden Soc., 1839), pp. lxxix-lxxx, lxxxix.
I don't know where the Plumpton/Gascoigne marriage date of 1487 comes
from, but it's likely an error for 1477/78.

Dear Will and Brad,
The year 1487 is my error. I checked and I have only one source for it and I
went back to it and it shows 1478. As Sir Robert Plumpton's second wife is
shown Isabelle Nevill.
With apologies for my error.
