Dear List Members,
I have come across a number of documents on
A2A recently which could shed light on the identity of Maud, wife of the
Guardian of Scotland Brian son of Alan (died by 1301/02)
These include Brian son of Alan`s IPM (documents C 133/104/9 Lincolnshire (30
Edward I (1301/02) and C 133/124/2 Chancery Inquistions Post Mortem
Lincolnshire and Northumberland (34 Edward I (1305/06)
Gift D Mus 2/10/26
15 August 1333 1) Matilda widow of Brian son
of Alan to 2 ) Richard, son of Nicholas Musgrave and to Richard`s brothers and
sisters if no heirs male Isabel , John, Christians (spelling in document),
Joanna All the Lands which Richard had given her in Soulby, Winton, Kaber,
Rokeby, Alan of Kaber, Lord Hugh de Lonyer, Lord John of Botell , Henry of
Wharton, Richard de Hatton, William de Smerdale, Gilbert de Regell, William de la
Mosse dated Kilwardby, Richmondshire
Gift with Warranty D MUS 2/10/32
1) Richard de Musgrave to
Lady Matilda de Bedale, widow of Lord Brian , son of Alan Lands and watermill
in Soulby, John de Lancaster, Lord of Holgill, Thomas de Rykeby, John de
Roschil, knights, Henry de Warcop, Robert de Sandford, Sheriff of Westmoreland,
William de Smerdale 19 May 1333
D MUS 2/10/14 Letter of Attorney 15 August
1333 Lady (?Matilda) de Bedale instructs John Daunay to deliver seisin on the
manors of Soulby, Winton, Kaber and Rokeby to Richard Musgrave
Note: There were several familes de Soulby,Wharton, de Sandford
and Musgrave (and others) involved in these manors. It could be as
complicated as Davis`" Circle Around Cecily " in his " Ancestry of Mary Isaac" However,
As She recieved and gave a gift apparently only to Richard Musgrave provided
He produced a male heir, It seems likely She was either herself a Musgrave ,
else the sister of Richard and his siblings` mother.
Also of Interest is Exchequer King`s Renembrancer
Ancient Deeds series D E 210/1112 Grant by Brian son of Alan to Agnes his
daughter, in tail of the manor of Sidesterne with appurtenances.
Sincerely,
James W Cummings
