Dear Douglas and others,
In your account of the Beaumont family
in Magna Carta Ancestry you list Mater William as the youngest son of
Earl Alexander Comyn of Buchan, however, apparently when John Comyn, Earl of
Buchan was killed in 1308, it was William, not Roger who attempted to claim the
Earldom to the detriment of their nieces Alice and Margaret as well as the
manor of Whitwick, Leicestershire. William resigned his claims being described
in the A2A record as William Comyn de Boghan without the title of Master as
one might expect of a churchman. There is a 1322 pleading of a William Comyn in
Leinster ,Ireland to be given farms there as recompense for losses suffered
fighting for the King in Scotland and in Ireland which timing coincides with a
similar plea from Sir Roger Comyn of Wetherby, York. As William, not Roger
attempted the seizures, I think William was probably the elder of the two.
Sincerely,

James W Cummings

I believe that a churchman could not inherit secular fiefs in those
days. See the series of charters for Eustacia de Colville, widow of
Reginald le Cheyne le pere, which show the descent of the Colville
lands avoiding the son who was a priest and going to her instead: I
think they are in the Cartulary of Melrose.

I had always understood that William was the next son, but was passed
over as a priest. Certainly Alexander sheriff of Aberdeen (d ca 1308)
did get the earldom in his issue. William was Provost of St Andrews
and d 1334x37. Perhaps he claimed it as guardian of his nieces. I
don't think there is any reason to equate him with another William
fighting in Ireland.

Try Watt's book on Scottish churchmen and Young's book on the Comyns.
