Early American settlers

Dear all,

I have been attempting to trace the history of the "Dowen" family of Wolverhampton for the last year, yet cannot get any earlier than 1759. Recently, my uncle, a Dowen, told me that at some point in the past, he had been told that one, or a few members of our family, had settled in America sometime in the seventeenth century. I looked at the list of passengers on the Mayflower, but didn't find a Dowen. Of course they could have sailed on another ship, either before or after the Mayflower.

Any help in discovering if any early settlers to America had the name Dowen would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

With such an odd surname, the first thing I do is go to
http://www.rootsweb.com and click on the WorldConnect Project
Then click on Advanced Search.

Enter just the surname.
It appears to me there's something *wrong* with this surname. I don't
see any Dowen's before this time period.

** I would try looking for "Down" rather than Dowen. Spelling was not

standardised until fairly recently.

There is a Walter Downie listed in the 'History of Bridgewater' as

having settled in Mass. about 1735.
