Dear John,
I have few details concerning Dodsworth and his ancestry,
so I'd be most interested in what you might have to offer.
From Hunter's South Yorkshire, I have it that a daughter
of Sir Thomas Bosville (Bosvile, etc.) of Ardsley and New
Hall and his wife Isabel Hastings was married to "NN"
Dodsworth [Hunter, South Yorkshire II:111]. This is the
same generation where Worth S. Anderson found the link to
the Symmes family of Barnsley. I show the Dodsworth husband
of the young lady Bosvile as Ralph Dodsworth, Esq., of
Schelley, co. Yorks. (d. 1489 or later).
Cheers,
John

Re: A Testator and his Will
Dear John [Watson],
Thanks for that information.
Some further information on the Dodsworths can be found in the
Yorkshire Archaelogical Journal (some if not all pertinent volumes
available via Google books). In particular, Alfred Ellis provided
extracts from Dodsworth's work, entitled "Dodsworth's Yorkshire Notes"
which are a font of much valuable information on Yorkshire families of
the medieval and Reformation eras. One particular entry in my notes:
' K. 77. Know p'sent & to come that I, Rafe Dodworth Esq., have given
&c. to William Hanson, Thomas Hanson, & Edmund Hanson, brethren of the
foresaid William, a certaine Mess' heretofore in the tenure of William
Gudheire, paying 24s. Dat. 5 Hen. 7 (1489). ' [Ellis, Wapentake of
Agbrigg, YAJ VII:417]
There is an interesting entry by Joseph Hunter concerning
correspondence between Roger Dodsworth and Thomas Bosvile of Ardsley
(the latter provided the pedigree information in the 1585
visitation). Dodsworth queried Bosvile concerning the tenure of
Edderthorpe by the Bosviles, and Bosvile replied back 1622, calling
the antiquary 'my lovinge cosen Roger Dodsworth'. If my placement of
Ralph Dodsworth (father of John) as husband of NN Bosvile is correct,
Roger Dodsworth and Thomas Bosvile were 4th cousins 1x removed. This
would likely mean that Joan Conyers would have been a 2nd wife of
Ralph Dodsworth: she would not have been the mother of John Dodsworth.
Note: if the Dodsworth-Bosvile marriage is in fact correct, Roger
Dodsworth has a notable amount of royal ancestry, including 3 descents
from Edward I of England via Ralph Dodsworth's mother in law, Isabel
Hastings.
Cheers,
John
