Early Montgomerys

A recent post by John Ravilious gave some corrections to the 14th century
Montgomery pedigree. How the earlier Montgomerys, from the John who
married Stewart on back, relate to what is on, e.g. Genealogics,
is not clear.

John, do you (or anybody else) have solid data? The data
on Genealogics is from ES, not usually a sp;id source for
Scotland. Interestingly, the usually reliable current
edition of Burkes Landed Gentry (Scotland) has nothing at
least under Eglinton.

The descent given in the Scots Peerage is hedged about with caveats,
but does proably show the most prominent Montgomery of each
generation. It is:

Roger de Montgomerie a baron of Duke William in Normandy
|
Roger, Governor of Normandy 1066
Had Shrewsbury 1068
Conquered Montgomeryshire
Had 4 brothers d before 1064
|
es Robert and
Arnulf who was Castellan of Pembroke Castle, sometimes called Earl of
Pembroke
|
Robert, certainly the first on record in Scotland, but not proved to
be a son of Arnulf
Recorded after 1164, alive in 1179
|
Alan, possible son
On record from 1177
Knighted by 1221
|
Robert & 2 brothers John and Henry
Knighted bef 1258
d ca 1260
|
Sir John "of Eastwood" per Sir William Mure of Rowallan, his
descendant
Probably the 1296 homager
|
John d by 1328
|
Alexander (and Alan who had the lands of Stair)
Safe conducts 1358
|
John m Elizabeth de Eglinton

I doubt that this helps much.
