More on Lettice Bagot

Legg inn av wjhonson » 25 feb 2007 07:01:24

Sometime ago I had posted the marriage agreement for Lettice Bagot,
dau of Walter Bagot of Blithfield (d 1623) to marry Humphrey Okeover,
son of Rowland Okeover and Anne his wife "within one year" being
1610/1.

And then we have A History of the Bagots of Bromley stating that this
same Lettice married William Owen of Condover.

While Burke's Landed Gentry states that this same Humphrey Okeover
married Martha Cheney.

This is all old news.
Now comes the new news.
While going over the extracted parish register entries for Condover, I
noticed something quite interesting.

William Owen of Okeover d 1662, was the "fifth and youngest son" of
Thomas Owen by Sarah Baskerville.

William Owen married a Miss Needham given variously as named Ellen or
Frances and by her had five children betwen 1611 and 1623.

I do not know where William Owen and Miss Needham were baptising their
children, but their eldest son Roger had a few baptised at Condover in
1638 and 1650.

However out of the woodwork springs a series of children, baptised at
Condover to William Owen and his wife "Lettice" (as given), from 1630
to 1639.

This information would fit quit neatly into making Lettice Bagot a
second wife to William Owen who d 1662.

It would also allow her to *actually* marry Humphrey Okeover or some
other person who would have to die or get divorced by 1630.

If she did marry Humphrey Okeover, and he died, then he cannot be the
person of that name who was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1631 unless
that date is mistaken.

This find also adds five more descendents for Richard Cecil, since
Lettice is his descendent.

And NOW comes the *utter and stupendously exciting vindication* that I
was correct all along.
You simply do not get this sort of thing often and so I'm very happy
to have found it after long hours of dreary reading.

Memorials of the Bagot Family, by 2nd Baron William Bagot on page 56
quotes a long letter from Walter Bagot which repeats that
his daughter Lettice Bagot *married !* Humphrey Okeover
who was actually the Ward of Walter's wife Elizabeth (Cave) Bagot at
the time (or about the time)
