CONTINUED USE OF MAIDEN NAME IN MARRIAGE

Am new to the list and this is a first posting.

I have a fairly straightforward family name which I am slowly but
surely tracing backwards.
Pretty straightforward back to last quarter of the 18th century.
Rather more complicated covering the period 17th/18th century.
Very tricky 15th/16th century.
Not too bad 11th/13th century.

My question relates specifically to the 13th/14th century when women
could carry their maiden name forward into marriage ie husband could
acquire the wifes name.
This practice of course can lead to all manner of difficulty in
maintaining a male hereditary line.

Does anyone on the list have experience of this difficulty and any
suggestions as to how to cover the 13th/14th century in particular.

Kind regards

The Inquisitio post mortem is the most useful link and you should find
enough information in the Inquisitions to establish what happened. It
was only in the uppermost echele that people changed their surnames.
Often lower down they didn't have them anyway!.
