Hello All,

The recent discussions re: the Bonkils and their relations
(by marriage or otherwise) brought up an issue of relationships,
which appears not to have been pursued as being relatively
insignificant vs. the purpose of the Brechin article in Scots
Peerage.

SP II:221 states in part, concerning Sir David de Brechin
and his marriage (as 2nd husband) to Margaret de Bonkil, states,

' Brechin, it seems, quesioned the validity of her
first marriage, and his own was also doubtful, but
he had obtained a papal dispensation <3>.'

The first references in footnote <3> to Bain's Calendar of
Documents Relating to Scotland have to do with the precept of
1304, concerning the restoration of lands in Uldale, Cumbs. to
Brechin and his wife. The last reference, " Ninth Rep, Hist.
MSS. Com., App. 181b." must then be the translation, or at least
an abstract, of the dispensation.

The Brechin ancestry is fairly well known, although
incomplete. It is possible that the information in this
dispensation (complete or abstracted) would be helpful in sorting
out the Bonkil ancestry, in particular perhaps identifying a
maternal link for Margaret de Bonkil. I had theorised a Dunbar
wife for Sir Alexander de Bonkil; while Christiana de Lilleburne
would not fit this bill, an earlier first wife of Sir Alexander
(now known to be the unknown mother of Margaret de Bonkil) just
might.

Should anyone have access to this text, that information would
certainly be of interest, to myself and many others of the list
besides.

Cheers,

John
