Bohemian Raphsody?

Legg inn av Leo van de Pas » 31 jan 2007 00:17:44

It appears that Wratislaw I, Duke of Bohemia, married "before 910". At the moment I have three children for him,
St. Wenceslas born in 911, Boleslaw born 912 and a daughter Dobrawa/Dobrawka.

Wratislaw died in 921.

My question is about the daughter Dobrawa-----is she his daughter?

I have her marry in 965 Mieszko I Dagon, Grand Duke of Poland, who was born about 935. They had children born about 967 and 968.

If Dobrawa is a daughter of Wratislaw she has to be born in 921 or earlier, making her at least 14 years older than her husband and about 46 when giving birth to her first child..................something does not seem right.

Would anyone know?

Many thanks,

I don't know about St. Wenceslas because he is not in my data base.
Dobrawska was the daughter of Boleslaw I (born 912) you have above, son of
Wratislaw I.
She is also sister to Boleslaw II, "The Noble" Duke of Bohemia 967-999; Died
999.

The only source that specifies Dubravka's family relationship is
Thietmar of Merseburg, who calls her sister to Duke Boleslav ("Hic
[Mieszko] a Boemia regione nobilem sibi uxorem senioris Bolizlavi
duxerat sororem"). It is usually assumed that this meant Boleslav II
(known as 'the Pious'), but the marriage took place ca 965 when his
father & namesake Boleslav I (known as 'the Cruel') was wtill living.

Consequently some historians have preferred to make Dubravka a
daughter of Duke Vratislav I, despite the very great chronological
difficulty - this view was notably taken by Berthold Bretholz in
_Geschichte Böhmens und Mährens_, volume I (1921) but has not
prevailed since then. I can't recall how he supported the implausible
idea, and I don't have access now to look this up. Perhaps someone
else can tell us.
