Some records of Whittingham Fogg and Ezekiel Fogg

A witness to the Gifford-Fogg indentures made at London in the 1670s
was a certain Whittingham Fogg. See _Records and Files of the Essex
County Quarterly Courts_, 7:176. Since the identity of Ezekiel Fogg's
mother Susan was recently cleared up, the next best clue to this family
(specifically the identity of his father Ralph Fogg, citizen and
skinner of London) is the given name of the witness to this indenture:
Whittingham. There is a person of the same odd name in a pedigree
chart found in _Archaeologia Cantiana_, vol. 5. This volume has an
article on the prominent Fogge family of Kent, and in the chart between
pages 124-25 is found a "Whittingham Fogge, of Chilham, 1663," who
married "Catharine, da. of Sir Thomas Wilsford, of Kingston." Very
interestingly, this man's grandfather was the Rev. Ezekias Fogge of
Chilham. The children of Rev. Ezekias are listed as Jane, Mary (wife
of John Rooke of Brabourne), Ezekias, George (M.A.), William, and Capt.
Richard, as well as "a[nother] son (see his mother's monument)." From
this, I'm guessing that the mother's monumental inscription mentions
"five sons," though only four are presently known--perhaps Ralph was
the unknown son.

You would think the Skinner's records would mention the father of Ralph
Fogg, but Leslie Mahler has checked this and found no mention of the
father.

Anyway, here are some Google references to the two men:

These Kent Fogges are clearly armigerous. They are apparently in the
1663/8 Visitation of Kent (there's a surname index online [but the
entire volume--Harleian 54, is not], which includes 'Fogge'; and
Humphery-Smith's 'armigerous ancestors' online index shows a hit for
"Fogge of Ashford, Braborne & Chilham' in Kent). The presence of
Whittingham F. as witness to Ezekiel's indenture is suggestive. Did you
check the Visitation pedigree for the extent of cousins named? Maybe
Ralph is tucked in there. A clinching relationship statement would add
another armigerous New England family to the roll.

The apparent fate of Ezekiel Fogg is revealed by _The Maryland Calendar
of Wills_, 1:91:

Fogg, Ezekiell, Dr.,

[will dated] 29th Oct. 1679;
[will proved] 4th Mch., 1680.

To niece Susanna Fogg, dau. of brother David Fogg, Katharine Cooke, and
Mary Richardson, personalty.
Ex. Brother David Fogg.
Overseers: Edward Cooke, Jno. Richardson.
Test: Jno. Richardson, Thos. Cooke.

David Fogg was mentioned as brother of Ezekiel in the London
indentures, so this is certainly the same disreputable Ezekiel Fogg
associated with Mr. Gifford:

http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/salem/wit ... ex173.html

Another Maryland will gives more on the family of David Fogg (1:206):

King, Thomas, Chas. Co.,

[will dated] 17th Jan., 1677;
[will proved] 15th Aug., 1678.

To wife Joanna, execx., dower rights,
" unborn child at 21 yrs. of age, personalty.
" wife's eld. dau. Eliza: Jones and son Philip Jones, personalty.
" Mary Rider and Susanna Fogg, daus. of dec'd sister, Susanna Fogg,
wife or [sic; of] David Fogg, and hrs., 75 A. (unnamed) at 16 yrs. of
age; sd. land to pass to their cous., Eliza: Johnes, should Mary and
Eliza: [sic] afsd. die without issue.
" George Newman, Sr., and John Weler, personalty.
Test: Jno. Douglas, Richd. Edelen.

Interestingly, on the page previous to this last one (p. 205) is the
will of Charles Gosfright, who was at least partially responsible for
Ezekiel Fogg's troubles in New England and New York:

Essex County [Mass.] Deedbooks, 5:446, mentions Ezekiel Fogg and
Charles Gosfright ...

Oddly, both Fogg and Gosfright were dead before the making of this
deed, Gosfright's will having been proved in Maryland on 5 Oct. 1678.

Looks like some of those Gifford refs. are wrong (at least the ones
involving Capt. Breedon). I took them from salemdeeds.com/historic/

Looks like Gifford and Fogg were business partners at least as early
as Sept. 1667 ...
