Dear All,
I recently visited the College of Arms London hoping to see some Manuscripts. I was informed that they had been moved to the British Library.
On a pedigree is says Harl 1396, 1241 1008 etc, I wanted to look at the manuscripts for other related information. Has anyone seen the original Manuscripts at the British Library, and can you give me any ideas what I have to do to see them, please.
My thanks
Jeff

Dear Jeff ~
You can order a copy of the Harleian Manuscripts direct from the
British Library. You simply need the manuscript and folio numbers.
You should also provide them the surname mentioned in the record.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Wow. I had no idea they would do that.
Do you know the cost for this, Douglas?
Kind regards,
Judy

The Harleian manuscripts have belonged to the British Museum (or British
Library, same thing) since the late 18th century. A good descriptive
index, in four folio volumes, has been in print for almost 200 years:
_A catalogue of the Harleian manuscripts in the British museum. With
indexes of persons, places, and matters ... Printed by command of His
Majesty King George III, in pursuance of an address of the House of
commons of Great Britain_, 4 vols. (London: G. Eyre and A. Strahan,
1808-12).
Pages may be requested as photocopies, digital images, microfilm,
whatever. There is a cost chart at the BL website, at:
http://www.bl.uk/imaging/remoteprices.html
There are economies of scale. Anything from one to a hundred pages
(presumably of the same volume or logically sequential items) costs a
flat £25 or 27. Pricey, but can be very handy. One must be sure of
precisely what pages are wanted--best to confirm any citations with the
manuscripts department before ordering copies.
