Re: Capt. Breedon the dandy
Is this Mrs. Aubrey the wife of William Aubrey, also associated at one
time with the Lynn Ironworks?

"Mavericke an enemie but Co. Temple a friend ..."
Mr. John Gifford, as a friend of Maverick, must have been considered an
enemy of New England as well ...

The pronunciation of the name Gifford at this period was JIFF-ud,
whence the occasional corruption to Jefferd, Jeffries, and sometimes
Jeffers.
Gifford was known to be a close friend of Maverick's. Samuel Maverick,
with William Bartholomew, gave bond of £2,300 in 1655 for John
Gifford's appearance before the General Court in Massachusetts Bay.

Gifford and Maverick testified together in London before the Council
for Foreign Plantations in 1662 (presumably against the current
government in New England):
W. Noel Sainsbury, ed., _Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series,
America and West Indies, 1661-1668_ [i.e., vol. 5 of the Colonial
series]:
p. 15:
[March 4 1661. Inner Court of Wards.] 42. Minutes of the Council for
Foreign Plantations. Capt. Breedon and Messrs. Godfrey, Gifford, and
Mavericke to attend on the 11th inst., with such papers and writings as
together with their own particular knowledge may give information of
the present condition and government of the several Colonies commonly
known by the name of New England. ...
pp. 16-17:
[March 11 1661. Inner Court of Wards.] 46. Minutes of the Council
for Foreign Plantations. The Council having heard some informations
concerning the condition and government of New England, Capt. Breedon
and Messrs. Godfrey and Gifford are again requested to attend on the
14th inst., as also Mr. Mavericke, Capt. Leveret, Thos. Bell, and Mr.
Wollnough.
[March 14 1661. Inner Court of Wards.] 48. Minutes of the Council
for Foreign Plantations.--Messrs. Bell and Wollnough to be discharged
from further attendance on the Council, but Capts. Breedon and Leveret,
and Messrs. Godfrey, Gifford, and Mavericke to attend on the 18th, and
Capt. Leveret to bring the copy of the patent for New England which he
acknowledges to have.
Then, in 1665, back in Massachusets, they both deposed about the
proposed Bennett-Hargrave marriage arrangement.

From the statement on the following page that "Mr. Maverick & Gifford
[are] gone to Jamica," it appears that "Mr. Jeffers" is John Gifford.
The pronunciation of the name Gifford at this period was JIFF-ud,
whence the occasional corruption to Jefferd, Jeffries, and sometimes
Jeffers.
Gifford was known to be a close friend of Maverick's. Samuel Maverick,
