Back in 2003, I made a few comments on the sketch of Ralph Fogg in
RCA's _Great Migration Begins_ (Ralph Fogg was the father of Gifford's
partner, Ezekiel Fogg). I discussed an apparently missed clue to the
identity of Susan, wife of Ralph Fogg, who is identified in the sketch
only as "Susanna _____; 'Susana Fogge' is in the list of Salem church
members compiled late in 1636, with the later annotation 'removed'
[SChR 6]; she was living at Plymouth, England, 21 March 1673/4 [ELR
4:79]."

Immediately below is an excerpt from my 2003 posting:
More importantly, however, the GMB misses a good clue to the identity
of Mr. Ralph Fogg's wife Susanna. The following two wills seem to show
that she was Susan or Susanna Draper, daughter of Edward and Susan (?
Banks) Draper of London.
NEHGR, 47:396-97: DAME KATHERINE BARNARDISTON wife of William Towse
Sergeant at the Law, 25 February 8th of Charles, proved 19 March 1632,
confirmed by sentence 2 March 1633. ... To Katherine Banckes, George
Banckes' daughter, three pounds. ... To Mary Banckes, my uncle
Christopher Banckes his daughter, for blacks, five pounds. To Alice
Banckes her sister for blacks five pounds. My desire is that my body
be decently kept till my funeral and if George Dunn be then living that
he does them "imballe me" as he did my later brother Banckes ... To my
sister Draper and her husband and Mary Draper. ... To my nephew Fogge
and his wife and his son. ... Susan Fogg and Mary Draper, daughters of
my sister Susan Draper. ... Ralfe Fogg the husband of my niece. John
Fogg her eldest son. ... To sister Draper three little oxe eyes (and
other silver). ... An immense lot of other silver &c. given to
kindred and friends.
NEHGR, 47:108-10: JOHN BANCKS citizen and mercer of London, 20 May
1630, proved 30 October 1630. ... Bequests to various city companies,
to the children of my sister Mary Deane deceased, the
children of my sister Susan Draper and of my sister Joane Titchborne.
My sister Dame Catherine Barnardiston. To William Banckes,
RichardBanckes, Thomas Banckes, George Banckes and Mary Banckes the
children of my uncle William Banckes deceased, Christopher Banckes,
Mary Banckes (a maid) Anne Banckes which married John Bigges, and Alice
Banckes, all the children of my uncle Christopher Banckes deceased. ...
To Susan ffoge the wife of Raffe ffoge, the daughter of my sister Susan
Draper, the sum of fifty pounds and also to John ffoge her son fifty
pounds more. My sister Susan Draper the wife of Edward Draper,
girdler, and her two daughter Susan ffoge and Mary Draper. ... My
brother in law Robert Titchborne of London, skinner, I make sole and
absolute executor, and
my brother in law Sir Richard Deane, knight, Sir Robert Densie,
Baronet, Anthony Withers, mercer, Clement Mosse, under chamberlain of
the City of London, and Hamblett Clerke, free of the Fishmongers and
one of the ancient clerks in the Mayor's Court, overseers.
The GMB sketch shows that Mr. Ralph Fogg and his wife Susanna had an
eldest son, John, who must have been born by 1628, as he sold land at
Salem 20 Feb. 1648/9 [ELR 1:7,8]: "one parcel sold 'with the consent of
his mother,' but no consent mentioned in sale of another parcel the
same day."
+ + + + +
These wills show a Ralph Fogg with wife Susan and son John in the
correct time period to be the settlers at Salem of the same names.
The Aspinwall notarial records, p. 270, have final proof for the
identity of Susan (Draper) Fogg, mentioning "an obligacon entered into
by him the sd John [Pocock] wth the sd Raph [Fogg] & one Georg Lister
in the Court of Arches touching the paymt of the sd fifty pounds (being
a legacie given to the sd John ffogg [son of Ralph] by John Bancks
mercer deceased) ..."

Furthermore, the John Pocock involved in the agreement is very probably
the same John Pocock who was an investor in the Saugus Ironworks ...

Dear John ~
According to information found online in an Banks family database cited
below, it appears that the New England immigrant, Susan Draper, wife of
Ralph Fogge, was the daughter of Edward Draper, girdler, by his wife,
Susan Banks. Susan (Banks) Draper in turn was the daughter of Thomas
Banks (died 1598), citizen and barber surgeon of London, by his wife,
Joan. Thomas Banks (died 1598) in turn was the son of Christopher
Banks, of Hadstock, Essex.
For further particulars of the extended Banks family pedigree, see the
weblink below:
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ... &id=I00668
The online database indicates that Susan (Draper) Fogg was the first
cousin of Anne Banks, wife of Edmund Waller, the prominent English
poet.

Dear John,
Another very interesting post. While I see as yet no direct
impact on my own ancestry, this will I'm sure be most helpful to
others.
By any chance, have you or any other of the list noted any
connection between this family and Katherine (Banks) (Royall) Isham, a
noted early Virginian and ancestress of Thomas Jefferson, among others?
Her ancestry continues to be a brick wall, to the best of my
knowledge.
Cheers,
John

Re: Final proof of the identity of Ezekiel Fogge's mother as
Hi John,
Sorry, I'm not up on Mrs. Banks-Royall-Isham, but here are the Google
books links to the wills of John Bancks and Katherine Barnadiston:
http://books.google.com/books?vid=0Etaf ... #PPA396,M1
http://books.google.com/books?vid=0Etaf ... #PPA108,M1
Maybe that would help.
As I pointed out earlier, Dr. Philip Read of Concord, Salem & area may
have been a kinsman of Ezekiel Fogg, based on his standing surety for
Fogg and later claiming John Gifford had cheated "his kinsman of
L1,000."
http://books.google.com/books?vid=OCLC0 ... ogg&pgis=1
I believe Dr. Philip Read has descendants in New England, so this might
be a helpful clue. Of course, the GMB sketch shows Ezekiel Fogg had a
wife Ann in New England -- I suppose it is possible _she_ was a
relation of Dr. Read. ...
